 Lost
« Thread Started on Sept 25, 2005, 1:08am »

My sister kept telling me I would really like this show, but I never checked it out until I came down with the flu. I really couldn't do anything all day but sleep and watch TV. I happened to be scanning the channels and noticed that Lost was on. I figured - what the hell. So I watched and I got into it. Turns out there was another episode on after that and I like that one as well. I started watching every repeat I could catch as well as the new episodes and now I'm loving this show.

I think what makes this show so intriguing, besides the mystery of the island, is how the writers give us bits and pieces about the characters' backgrounds through flashbacks within the episodes.

Now that the series has made it to season two, it's time to discuss the several theories floating around out there about the island, the survivors, etc.

One particularly interesting theory is that the survivors really aren't survivors at all; they are dead and the island is some sort of limbo. Now, if this theory is correct, I have found several ways to expand upon this idea. Now, I'm not really certain that this theory is correct, but I decided to hypothesize a bit using the theory as the crux of my thoughts.

If the island is some sort of limbo, then, Locke is sort of an agent of the island. Just as he has been used all of his life, the island is using him to weed out the good and the evil. Boone's past shows him as a good soul. Thus, the island had no use for him and he was sent on his way. Arzt, the science teacher, was killed off after we discovered there was nothing terribly strange about his past. Every one else that we have met on the island has a sordid past and it seems that the island has a plan for them...but first, Locke must weed them out.

Walt and his dog seem to be agents of God in this theory. Walt wouldn't know this and is still acting the consumate kid, seeking attention and wanting his way, while trying to come to grips with powers he doesn't understand. He seeks to help the survivors. He burned the boat to stop the islanders from leaving the island because he knew the voyage spelled doom, but couldn't explain why. He warned Locke against opening the hatch - and one could surmise that the inhabitant of the underground whatever is an agent of the devil. Just think about what Desmond said to Jack about miracles and how, shortly after, Jack's future wife was the recipient of such a gift. Jack wanted to fix her and perhaps it was Desmond who made it happen. Unwittingly, Jack may have made a deal with the devil. :o

Of course, this theory is just that - a theory. And there are quite a few others floating around out there.

What do you think?

Interesting theory and very good points!

My brother and i have made up a number of theories. One of them being that the island is a base that Nazi's used for top secret experiments with animals and also mechanical stuff. It kinda explains the polar bear and that dark mist that they keep seeing, but then again we were drinking beer.

I'm not sure, i think i wanna be surprised than rather guess what's going on.

I believe that this is all an illusion and there really is no show called Lost at all. We will wake up and realize it has been all a dream. I mean, how could you explain ABC putting on quality television.

I've been thinking the whole limbo thing myself for awhile now, Talon, and the phone call that prompted this post definitely strengthened that theory! You've got some excellent thoughts here!

The latest episodes of Lost seem to support my theory that the passengers are dead and stuck in limbo. It seems like every passenger that wasn't taken right away has some kind of redemption process to go through. Each character that has died recently went through their own sort of redemption process - realizing that things they've done in the past were wrong and atoning for them. Even Shannon. All of the evil things she had done in the past were basically in response to losing the one person who loved and believed in her - her father. After losing that, she set about getting what she wanted through manipulation. Until she met Sayid (sp?) and began slowly changing her attitude. Once she finally found someone who loved and accepted her and truly believed in her, she could finally be taken by the island.

I'm also under the impression that The Others are former members of the Dharma project. It is my thought that these people are now long dead and have become the welcomers of the dead, sent out among those in limbo to bring them to their final destination. If you remember, Goodwin said that they only took the good people. He said that the children were in a better place. The people who had not made the list still had to find their own redemption - my opinion.

Walt - I think he is definitely dead and working for the other side. First, he only speaks backwards, which could be seen as speaking in tongues. And he warned Shannon to keep quiet. Had she listened and not tried to find him, she would never have been killed. I think The Others tried to take him to salvation, but Walt fought them and ended up somewhere else.

I asked my sister about Dharma, because I had heard of the word before and she said it had something to do with Bhuddist teachings. She said my theory could work based on karma, but I'll let her tell you about that.

As far as The Others taking them to the other side, I believe that the "monster" is taking them in the opposite direction. When the monster pulled Locke down, he chose not to take him. I think this is because the monster is unsure of how to read Locke. Is he good? Or can he be tipped to the side of evil? It doesn't even seem like the monster knows.

Okay. Here's the dharma factor. Assuming that the island is in fact a way of determing who can move on to heaven or hell, i.e. limbo, then it seems as though the Dharma Corporation is attempting to teach the people what they need to know in order to pass. As they are learning, they are burning off karma on their way to rebirth. Here' how it works...

Dharma is the overall name of the teachings of the Buddha. The Buddha believed that people needed to be taught using what was called "Skillful Means"--this means that people needed to be taught using what they could most understand. The Buddha would teach in many different ways depending upon what the person needs to hear to understand.

This related to the Dharma Corporation in that the action of Dharma are in an attempt to teach the islanders what they need to move on. The use of the Corporation is due to the capitalistic mindsets of our current world. Dharma is teaching with what they would know--corporations, corruption and governmental control used as metaphors for whatever message truly needs to be set out.

How'd i do, Talon?

Hey, anyone think that Locke's paralysis might have been self-induced? I don't know why, but I just thought about it after the last episode. His character is sort of shady, anyway, and what would be better than to find out that he was never really handicapped to begin with. Either that he faked it for some reason or that he convinced himself that he was sick?

I never thought about that. It seemed that being paralyzed had made him so helpless...I doubt that he would do that to himself...

...Are you thinking it is psychosematic?

In the back of my mind, I knew this, but it didn't strike me until I was reading my Psychology book today. There is a philosopher by the name of John Locke. He believes that at birth, children are blank slates and that people gain their characteristics over time and through experience.

Thoughts? Any way that this philosopher may connect to the John Locke of Lost fame? (Naturally, this isn't his only theory--it's just the one I happened to read about today! LOL)

Funny. I was actually going to tell you that yesterday, cuz I just read a bit about John Locke and his blank state theory in class. But my blank state lost the information before I could tell you.
If applied to Lost's John, how would that theory work? maybe that the island is a chance for everyone to start over? Or maybe that the children they take are blank states and the others want to make sure they 'grow up right.'

I was actually playing with both theories.

I simply want to point out that in yesterday's episode, the waitress in the flashback was Kate's mom! I love when they do that!

The Hanso Foundation site [http://www.thehansofoundation.org

On the hanso website, at the bottom, there is hidden text that can only be seen if you highlight the black. The message goes as followed:
Pdeo eo jkp ukqn bwqhp. Wo ukq kjya odkqpaz wp pda pkl kb ukqn hqjco,
sa'ra whh ckp "xhkkz kj kqn dwjzo." E fqop dkla iu bneajz eo naopejc awou.

Sdana wna ukq? E'hh jaaz ukq pk iaap ia ej Jknswu.

The message was decoded by Sehh wjz Eoiwah.

The message reads:
This is not your fault. As you once shouted at the top of your lungs, we’ve all got
“blood on our hands.” I just hope my friend is resting easy.

Where are you? I’ll need you to meet me in Norway.

Whatever this means, I would start looking at other websites to see if there are other hidden texts that will shed some light on the meaning.
The code breaking trick is to replace every letter written with one four spaces ahead in the alphabet. So K would be o and so on.
