I know the guy is supposedly a terrific actor...I'm not really in agreement, but that's just me...but chosing Heath Ledger for the huge role of THE JOKER in the next Batman film???!!!

There is no rule in place in what age Joker needs to be in relation to Batman...I think it should be Mark Hamil...Come on...he does the voice so well!

I'm not saying Ryan Phillippe is a bad actor! He is excellent! I just don't know about 2Face...

Okay. First of all, Talon, I love you for your opinion on Heath Ledger... Seriously, ever since I first saw him on www.ibelieveinharveydent.com, I've called him "The Joke." LOL No, there's no diffinitive age settings for Batman or the Joker... but that's not really the problem for me. Take Alfred. Now, I loved Michael Caine as Alfred... but I felt he was a little too star power. I look back at Batman Begins and I often think of Alfred not as Alfred, but as Michael Caine as Alfred. I understand some people felt this same way about Jack Nicholson as the Joker. Heath Ledger is going to cause the same phenomenon to a ridiculous extent. In fact, I already can't see him as the Joker at all. Judging from his voice over in the teaser trailer, it sounds like he's always going to be Heath Ledger doing a horrible job of trying to play a role he was never, ever meant to play. I mean, it's not even his star power that bothers me. It's his complete incompatibility with everything I've ever thought the Joker to be. I think "The Joker" and I honestly do think of the Animated Series Joker who was voiced by Mark Hamill. That's how the Joker should look and should sound and Heath Ledger winds up looking like some emo loser who cut his own face and decided it would be cool to put on lip stick and make up like that Joker character he'd seen once in a comic, and sounds like himself, trying his very best to play a character as he's seen others play it--because he himself has no understanding of that character. I mean, I don't want to just bash him... but the Joker is and always has been my favorite villain of all time. And Heath Ledger really is the Joke. He's so wrong for the Joker. And it's not just that the Joker is really different in this movie--I'm all for doing him up in an original way. The problem is, Heath? Heath Ledger? Possibly the worst choice for the Clown Prince of Crime shy of Carrot Top. And yeah, Two Face? Ryan Phillipe? Same thing. I never would've placed him as someone who has always at the very least seemed older. Having him as Two Face really makes it look and feel like Christopher Nolan is trying his best to lure in a younger audience. That's okay, only, he's destroying characters to do it, which is not only the worst way to lure in potential fans--it's also a completely unnecessary sacrifice.

I hope the "new" Batman movies didn't just take a nose-dive with these castings. That's what killed the series to begin with... they tried to get too many villains and too much star power. The only reason I can see Heath Ledger is his smile... it does sort of remind me of "The Joker." But I'm with Kordmalgemar on this one. "The Joker" is my absolute favorite villain, ever. Christain Bale as Batman was believable... he's always sort of had the dark roles and wasn't much of a star power. But come on... how unbelievable are Heath Ledger and Ryan Phillipe as villains?
I do have a question though... are they starting over with the Batmans? Like are we supposed to act like the other four movies didn't happen? Because if I need to suspend reality like that, I need to know. Because in my mind, the Joker thing has already been done. Just curious.

It almost sounds as if that's exactly what they are planning on doing.

Actually, yeah, Batman Begins was the first part of a complete revamp of the Batman movie franchise. Unlike Superman Returns, which is supposed to take place after Superman and before Superman II, Batman Begins is a completely new approach to the Dark Knight on film. It takes after the Batman: Year One comic series by Frank Miller of Sin City and The Dark Knight Returns fame.
However, on the topic of this casting fiasco, Ryan Phillipe will not play Two-Face. I was talking to my brother--a fellow Batman junky (although he's truly the king of Batman junkies)--about it and he reminded me of a key detail that makes it incredibly obvious that Ryan Phillipe will not play Two-Face. I don't know how everyone feels about spoilers so I won't say who does play Two-Face, but Batman fanatics will figure it out like a snap of the fingers.
