CBS has announced that this week’s episode is to be the series finale of Jericho, a television show brought back to the airwaves by a loyal fanbase that campaigned aggressively to save their show.
CBS set this show up to fail. It’s the ultimate slap in the face to all of Jericho’s fans! The fact that this season’s opener was one of the most downloaded at iTunes and that it was the most viewed at CBS’ own website whould count for something. They changed the time slot and day the show was on, put it in as a little advertised mid-season replacement and expected higher ratings than the ones they got. From what I saw, the ratings weren’t half bad.
Jericho was a fairly original show with plenty of action and intrigue...a thinking man’s show. But from what I can see, the powers that be would be happier if television was filled with nothing but reality television. It’s all part of dumbing down the viewing audience. Sooner or later, we’ll be living in the land of Fahrenheit 451 (read the book by Ray Bradbury), where the shows are designed to create ADD. The less attention you pay to things, the quicker you are to accept the crap being handed to you.
It grows clearer with the cancelling of every show that displays some originality, that requires some actual thought by viewers and isn’t some sort of spin-off of CSI or Law and Order that the powers that be in TV Land don’t care what the viewers think. They care about dollars and cents and whatever can get those into their pockets in the largest quantities in the shortest amounts of time possible.
Sooner or later, all television will revolve around reality programs and game shows.
