Growth - it's a very difficult concept for some to understand. Often times, when one begins to grow - blossom into a more mature individual, others feel left behind. Often times, they lash out, as if hoping to provoke that individual into a denial of his growth. They do this in hopes of "stunting" the growth and bringing them back to their original state. It's almost like the alcoholic who, having gotten help to fight his problem, returns to his former drinking buddies. One drinking buddy offers him a beer, secretly hoping that he will take it.
It's a shame, really, that these individuals can't just accept the growth of others and go with it - rejoice in it. Instead, they seek to downplay it at every turn, lashing out at those who they now have no use for, possibly because they feel threatened by the new-found state of happiness of their former allies. - Me, myself, and I

Some people are like slinkies,
They don't really have a purpose,
But they still bring a smile to your face
when you push them down the stairs.

"Men who look on nature, and their fellow-men, and cry that all is dark and gloomy, are in the right; but the sombre colours are reflections from their own jaundiced eyes and hearts. The real hues are delicate, and need a clearer vision." - Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist
