LOVELESS
(October 31, 2017 – Los Angeles, CA) – Varèse Sarabande will release the LOVELESS – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on November 10, 2017. The album features the original score composed by Evgueni and Sacha Galperine (The Wizard of Lies, The Past). LOVELESS is directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev (LEVIATHAN) and won the award for Best Film at the BFI London Film Festival and the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Evgueni and Sacha began to write the score for LOVELESS without seeing a frame of film or a word on paper. “Andrey wanted us to give an absolutely free interpretation of the story based solely on his description, hoping that the music would become a missing piece of the psychological and emotional puzzle,” said Evgueini.
In Loveless, Zhenya and Boris are going through a vicious divorce marked by resentment, frustration and recriminations. Already embarking on new lives, each with a new partner, they are impatient to start again, to turn the page – even if it means threatening to abandon their 12-year-old son Alyosha. Until, after witnessing one of their fights, Alyosha disappears…
How to process this event would be a central focus of the score. “We had to go deep into our imaginations and emotions,” explained Evgueni, “trying to connect with what is happening in the heads of the parents when their child disappears and their world is reduced to only one thought: find him.”
“In the language of music,” Evgueni continued, “ it would be one note, one chord, one rhythm – it’s how the idea of ’11 Cycles of E’ was born.” That piece both opens and closes the film.
“Director Andrey Zvyagintsev’s cinema always shows the invisible link between the intimate stories of human beings and the universe. And often the music personifies this link,” said Evgueni. “Finding the way to express this connection was the most incredible and gratifying challenge.”
Brothers Evgueni and Sacha Galperine relocated to France, from their native Russia in 1990, to complete the classical music training they’d begun in Moscow. Soon after arriving in Paris, Evgueni was drawn to composing film scores while still studying symphonic composition and electro-acoustic music at the National Conservatory (CNSM) in Paris. Sacha turned to rock and electronic music after receiving a first prize for violin performance at the Conservatory of Versailles.
Evgueni and Sacha Galperine are equally at ease and focused on storytelling, whether working on independent films—over a dozen in Europe and Asia— mass-market films, or contributing music to blockbusters like M. Night Shyamalan’s SPLIT, and Garry Ross’ The Hunger Games. Their international credits include Luc Besson’s The Family, Asghar Farhadi’s The Past, Eric Lartigau’s La Famille Bélier, Alix Delaporte’s Le Dernier coup de Marteau (official selection at the Venice IFF), Nicolas Provost ‘s The Invader (Best Music award at Ghent Film Festival), Yilmas Arslan’s Brudermord, and Jiang Wenli’s Lan.
Their recent credits include the HBO Films Original THE WIZARD OF LIES, starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer, directed by Barry Levinson, the acclaimed French TV show Le Baron Noir, Courtney Hunt’s The Whole Truth and Barry Levinson’s upcoming HBO film HAPPY VALLEY starring Al Pacino.
Sony Pictures Classics presents LOVELESS, Russia’s official selection for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2018 Academy Awards. Varèse Sarabande will release the LOVELESS – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and on CD on November 10, 2017.

LBJ
ABOUT LBJ
LBJ – After powerful Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson (Woody Harrelson) loses the 1960 Democratic presidential nomination to Senator John F. Kennedy (Jeffrey Donovan), he agrees to be his young rival’s running mate. But once they win the election, despite his extensive legislative experience and shrewd political instincts, Johnson is sidelined in the role of vice president. That all changes on Nov. 22, 1963, when Kennedy is assassinated and Johnson, with his devoted wife Lady Bird (Jennifer Jason Leigh) by his side, is suddenly thrust into the presidency. As the nation mourns, Johnson must contend with longtime adversary Attorney General Bobby Kennedy (Michael Stahl-David) and one-time mentor Georgia Senator Richard Russell (Richard Jenkins) as he seeks to honor JFK’s legacy by championing the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The film takes its audience up close to the psychological truth of LBJ’s complicated fusion of racism and racial enlightenment. His commitment to the Civil Rights Act becomes a way of seeing where the winds are blowing, but also letting those winds sculpt the sands of his humanity. To change the country, he changes himself.

ALIAS GRACE
(November 2, 2017 – Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release the ALIAS GRACE - Original Mini-Series Soundtrack digitally on November 3, 2017. The album features original music by Mychael Danna and Jeff Danna created for the acclaimed CBC/Netflix mini-series produced by Halfire Entertainment.
“Alias Grace is based on a novel of the same name written by celebrated author Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid’s Tale) of a true story that took place in Canada in 1843,” said Mychael Danna. “We wanted the score to mirror the formal rigidity of British Colonial 19th Century society.”
The story of Alias Grace follows Grace Marks, a poor, young Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Upper Canada who, along with stable hand James McDermott, was convicted of the brutal murders of their employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery, in 1843. James was hanged while Grace was sentenced to life imprisonment. Grace became one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of 1840s Canada for her supposed role in the sensational double murder, and was eventually exonerated after 30 years in jail. Her conviction was controversial, and sparked much debate about whether Grace was actually involved in the murder, or merely an unwitting accessory.
“We chose a chamber group of virtuosic musicians to lay out the complicated fabric of the musical world of Alias Grace,” Jeff Danna explained. “There was interwoven string parts, often with one player per part in the traditional way, colored by fleeting woodwinds, piano and even the occasional church organ - all of it underlined with a dark thread of mystery and growing doom as we slowly move towards the inevitable violence of the crime.”
MYCHAEL DANNA is an Academy Award®-winning film composer recognized for his evocative blending of non-western traditions with orchestral and electronic music. Danna received the 2013 Golden Globe® and 2013 Oscar® for scoring Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, following his collaborations with Lee on The Ice Storm in 1997 and Ride with the Devil, in 1999. His other celebrated collaborations include those with Bennett Miller on his multiple Oscar®-nominee Moneyball, in 2011 and his Oscar®-winning drama Capote, in 2005; with Terry Gilliam on his Oscar®-nominated The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, in 2009 and Tideland, in 2005; with Mira Nair on Vanity Fair, in 2004, Monsoon Wedding, in 2001 and Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, in 1996; and with Billy Ray on Breach, in 2007 and Shattered Glass, in 2003.Danna’s credits also include the 2006 Oscar®-winning Little Miss Sunshine, for which he shared a Grammy® Award nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album; Marc Webb’s acclaimed romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer in 2009; and James Mangold’s 1999 Oscar®-winning film Girl, Interrupted.
Mychael also scored the Oscar®-nominated short preceding the film, Sanjay’s Super Team.
For television Mychael won an Emmy® for Outstanding Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (Original Dramatic Score) for World Without End.
Upcoming projects for Mychael and Jeff Danna include the animated film The Breadwinner, and for Mychael the feature film The Man Who Invented Christmas.
JEFF DANNA was born in Burlington, Ontario. A reluctant piano student at age eight, he found solace in the guitar at age eleven and began playing professionally at fifteen until a hand injury at age 21 curtailed his performance career. He subsequently began composing for films and moved to Los Angeles to continue working. Danna has created scores for a long and varied list of films. His credits include such diverse projects as the hit film adaptations of the video game/action franchises Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2; the Ryan Gosling-Anthony Hopkins legal drama Fracture; The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus and Tideland, both directed by Terry Gilliam; Lakeview Terrace, directed by Neil LaBute; a series of films for director Brett Morgen, including The Kid Stays in The Picture, Chicago 10, and, most recently, the Kurt Cobain biopic Montage of Heck; Closing the Ring for director Richard Attenborough; and the cult classic The Boondock Saints, among others.
Additionally, his collaborative Orchestral Celtic albums with his brother, composer Mychael Danna, have enjoyed worldwide success and placed in the Top Ten on the Billboard chart in the United States.
In 2015, Mychael and Jeff Danna worked on the score for The Good Dinosaur and received an Annie® nomination for Outstanding Achievement, Music in an Animated Feature Production. Mychael and Jeff also wrote the original score for the animated film Storks and for Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk directed by Ang Lee which were both released in 2016.
For television, Mychael and Jeff Danna wrote the original music for the FX series Tyrant, which earned them both Emmy® nominations in the categories of Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) and Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music in 2015. They were previously Emmy®-nominated for Camelot in 2011.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
(November 8, 2017 – Los Angeles, CA) – Varèse Sarabande will release the THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on November 10, and on CD November 17, 2017. The album features original music by Carter Burwell (CAROL, WONDERSTRUCK).
“Frances McDormand, can do anything,” said Burwell. “We’ve done so many different things together, including FARGO, OLIVE KITTERIDGE and going back to BLOOD SIMPLE. Martin McDonagh, with whom I previously worked with on IN BRUGES, has similar sensibilities to me, and I’d be happy to work with him on anything. This film really felt like getting back together with my family.”
THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a darkly comedic drama from Academy Award® winner Martin McDonagh (IN BRUGES). After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes (Academy Award® winner Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, commissioning three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Academy Award® nominee Woody Harrelson), the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing's law enforcement is only exacerbated.
“I think that the music is really putting you in the position of Frances’s character,” Burwell explained. “I think it’s almost always what the music should be doing, helping you to see things from her point of view, when she does things that might be reprehensible, to help you understand what she’s doing.”
Carter Burwell has composed the music for more than 80 feature films, including BLOOD SIMPLE, RAISING ARIZONA, MILLER'S CROSSING, BARTON FINK, THE HUDSUCKER PROXY, ROB ROY, FARGO, THE SPANISH PRISONER, GODS AND MONSTERS, VELVET GOLDMINE, THREE KINGS, BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? (BAFTA Nominee for Film Music), BEFORE NIGHT FALLS, A KNIGHT’S TALE, THE ROOKIE, ADAPTATION, INTOLERABLE CRUELTY, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, IN BRUGES, BURN AFTER READING, TWILIGHT, WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (Golden Globe Nominee for Best Original Score), A SERIOUS MAN, THE BLIND SIDE, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, TRUE GRIT, TWILIGHT: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 & 2, AND THE FIFTH ESTATE, MR. HOLMES, LEGEND, THE FINEST HOURS, HAIL CAESAR!, THE FAMILY FANG, THE FOUNDER, and most recently GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN and WONDERSTRUCK.
Burwell most recently wrote the music for the drama CAROL starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. Burwell received his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Score for CAROL. He was also was nominated for a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Movie Award for CAROL. Burwell won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s Award for Best Music Score for CAROL and ANOMALISA. His theater work includes the chamber opera The Celestial Alphabet Event and the Mabou Mines productions Mother and Lucia’s Chapters of Coming Forth by Day. STEPHEN KING SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION – LIMITED EDITION BOX SET FEATURING FOUR CLASSIC SCORES ON EIGHT CDs
(November 10, 2017– Los Angeles, CA) – Varèse Sarabande Records is proud to announce a new 8-CD box set celebrating the music of four classic Stephen King titles – DREAMCATCHER, FIRESTARTER, THE STAND and THE SHINING. The limited edition STEPHEN KING SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION box set (1500 units) is designed to pay tribute to Stephen King paperbacks with a 24-page bound booklet.
Two beloved titles are featuring expanded editions. The 1994 post-apocalyptic mini-series THE STAND, earned prolific composer W. G. Snuffy Walden an EMMY® nomination that year. The four-part mini-series boasted an all-star cast including Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe, Molly Ringwald, Ray Walston, Ruby Dee, and Ossie Davis. Directed by Lawrence Kasdan, 2003’s DREAMCATCHER features original music by Academy Award® nominee James Newton Howard. Both are being released as 2-CD deluxe editions.
One of the earlier Stephen King books to be adapted into film, FIRESTARTER features original music by Tangerine Dream – and is being reissued for the first time in almost 15 years. The film launched Drew Barrymore into superstardom, following her introduction as Gertie in E.T. two years earlier. The album is considered the crowning achievement from one of the band's most prolific lineups (Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke, and Johannes Schmoelling).
The 1997 three-part mini-series THE SHINING is being presented on a 3-CD set, one disc for each night of the special event series. The origin of the miniseries is attributed to King’s dissatisfaction with the 1980 adaptation directed by Stanley Kubrick. The mini-series was shot at The Stanley Hotel (Estes Park, CO) – which was the hotel that inspired King to write the book in the first place. The Nicholas Pike-penned score is being released commercially for the first time.
Housing the collection is a 24-page bound booklet, featuring liner notes by Randall D. Larson with original art by Shawn Conn.
STEPHEN KING SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION will be available directly from Varèse Sarabande Records www.varesesarabande.com on November 10, 2017.

DOLORES
ABOUT DOLORES
Dolores is the documentary of Dolores Huerta, among the most important, yet least known, activists in American history. In the 1950's, this working-class wife and mother of eleven children helps to establish the first farm workers unions alongside Cesar Chavez. From the tireless fight for racial and labor justice, Huerta, one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century, develops a platform for feminism and gender equality. Although her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized, Huerta continues the fight to this day, at age 87.
With intimate and unprecedented access, Dolores directed by Peter Bratt, delves into the raw, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change. The film documents Huerta’s fight against economic poverty, harassment, racism, physical and even sexual abuse of the farm workers, while facing the personal attacks of her enemies and the macho temperament of her allies. DOWNSIZING – ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK
(December 8, 2017- Burbank, CA) – WaterTower Music will release the Downsizing - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack at digital retail on December 22, 2017 and on CD January 12. The album features original score by Rolfe Kent (Up In The Air, Sideways) and the original song “A Little Change In The Weather,” co-written by Kent and performed by The Swingles. Paramount Pictures’ Downsizing will be in theaters on December 22, 2017.
“Rolfe Kent and I agreed that no matter what the music was meant to express, we wanted it as charming, melodic and full-throated as possible,” said writer/director Alexander Payne. “Rolfe and I have worked together for over 25 years, and this was, I feel, the finest score he has yet produced, and, if you’ll forgive the immodesty, as fine a score I’ve heard in any film in recent memory.”
“Alexander asked for the score to be beautiful classical music,” Kent described. The composer wanted to avoid film score clichés and took a different route. “I figured a Kubrickian approach was best, where the music sounds like it existed outside of the film, and was discovered to match the scene perfectly.” Known for using unexpected textures, sounds and his own signature musical personality, this opened the floodgates for Rolfe. “As ever, Alexander was open to hearing unexpected sounds, so when I threw him the curve of an opera aria sung in Norwegian, or some bagpipes, he loved it.”
Downsizing is directed by Academy Award© winner Alexander Payne (The Descendants, Sideways) and stars Academy Award© winner Matt Damon (The Martian, Good Will Hunting), Academy Award© winner Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained), Hong Chau (Inherent Vice, Big Little Lies), Academy Award© nominee Kristen Wiig (The Martian, Bridesmaids), Udo Kier (Melancholia), Jason Sudeikis (Colossal), Academy Award© nominee Laura Dern (Wild, Rambling Rose), Neil Patrick Harris (Gone Girl), and Rolf Lassgård (A Man Named Ove).
“One of the first scenes I was shown was a monologue from Ngoc Lan Tran (Hong Chau), which is this terrific performance and contains so much energy and pathos and sweetness,” Kent explained. “One morning at 5AM I found myself dreaming of this fragile cello tune that came out in small, delicate sobs almost, and I had to wake myself up and record myself humming it, because I knew it was perfect for her character. As the score developed we sometimes changed the instrumentation, but that moment is still as I dreamed it, delicately played on cello.”
In addition to his score, Downsizing gave Kent the opportunity to co-write an original song, “A Little Change In The Weather.” Using the Norwegian opera aria, he had the idea that this would become the song to start the end credits, rounding out the story. “I knew exactly who could help me with the writing of it, and also elevate it into something extraordinary, and that was Jo and Ed of The Swingles!” Kent described. “I had some rough place-holder words, but they then completed the final lyrics and composed some 30 vocal parts. When Alexander and I heard what they had created we were amazed and thrilled.”
"What a privilege to be working again with Rolfe and Alexander - long time friends of the label" commented WaterTower Music head, Jason Linn. "Their timeless blended voice continues to move, amaze and defy musical convention. We are thrilled to partner with this creative force!”
The Downsizing - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is now available for pre-order, and will be available at digital retail on December 22, 2017 and on CD January 12.
ABOUT ROLFE KENT
Unexpected texture, sounds and a signature musical personality are the hallmarks of British film composer Rolfe Kent, who has scored more than 50 films, including Academy Award® nominated Up in the Air (for which he won a Golden Satellite award), Sideways (for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award in 2007), Labor Day, Bad Words (Jason Bateman’s directorial debut), Dom Hemingway, About Schmidt, Election, Mean Girls, Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde II, Wedding Crashers, The Matador, Reign Over Me, The Hunting Party, and Thank You for Smoking. Kent also composed the Emmy®-nominated main title theme for the Showtime hit, Dexter. In 2012, he received the Richard Kirk award for career achievement.
Born in England into a non-musical family, Kent intuitively felt at age 12 that he wanted to be a film composer, although his early musical training was brief and not so formal. Citing Jarre’s Lawrence of Arabia and Morricone’s The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, as inspirations, Kent took the advice of an early music teacher to avoid rigid course work that would dampen his enthusiasm. He followed an entirely different path and, taking counterpoint to what is often cited as culture mired in cynicism, profited from his early course work in theology to relate it to music. After enrolling in psychology studies at University of Leeds in Yorkshire, Kent’s musical career was casually begun at a dance club when the director of a play offered him a chance to “do” the music. His jump-start was his composition for a stage musical Gross at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a springboard for authors, composers and performers.
In the confines of his musically busy studio, one can immediately see why his musical personality is as distinct and his own. Constantly on the go, adventurous and curious, Kent has developed a style that is not only distinct, but indicative of his aversion to the-anticipated-score in tone, texture and rhythm. The walls are lined with many familiar and many more unfamiliar instruments, gingerly handled and gleefully demonstrated for their sonic qualities. Among his collection are the Indonesian percussion instrument the angklung, the shawm (first used in military maneuvers as a psychological weapon), the melodica, used for the light, soothing effect in Kent’s jazz-infused score for his Golden Globe-nominated Sideways, and an instrument he discovered and cannot name that sounds like the world’s beaches at their most romantic high tide... combined.
Kent has the distinction of attracting and sustaining relationships with directors as popular and diverse as Alexander Payne, Mark Waters, Jason Reitman, Burr Steers, and Richard Shepard. His upcoming film releases include DOWNSIZING (directed by Alexander Payne), CRASH PAD, THE PHILOSOPHY OF PHIL (directed by Greg Kinnear), Disney’s MAGIC CAMP, and the French film LE PETIT SPIROU.

ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD
Sony Classical proudly announces the release of ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring music by multiple Golden Globe nominee Daniel Pemberton. The soundtrack to the new film by Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator) will be available digitally on December 22 and on CD January 12. The film will be released in the U.S. on December 25, 2017.
Daniel Pemberton says about the soundtrack: “Working with the legend that is Ridley Scott is always an absolute delight. He gives you the space to try something different and loves to be surprised - he doesn’t want the obvious approach. There are not many movies where you can write operatic choral pieces, brand new classical work and modern post-rock all in the same world but within this film we could. You’ve got be able to keep up with him though and he moves FAST! - I think I just about managed on this soundtrack, and couldn’t be happier with the result.”
ABOUT ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD:
ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD follows the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer) and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother Gail (Michelle Williams) to convince his billionaire grandfather (Christopher Plummer) to pay the ransom. When Getty Sr. refuses, Gail attempts to sway him as her son’s captors become increasingly volatile and brutal. With her son’s life in the balance, Gail and Getty’s advisor (Mark Wahlberg) become unlikely allies in the race against time that ultimately reveals the true and lasting value of love over money. The film is inspired by true events. Some scenes, characters and dialogue have been fictionalized for dramatic purposes.
Directed by Ridley Scott, the screenplay is by David Scarpa and based on the book by
John Pearson. The film is produced by Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas Quentin Curtis Chris Clark, Ridley Scott, Mark Huffam and Kevin J. Walsh. The movie stars Michelle Williams, Christopher Plummer, Mark Wahlberg, Romain Duris, Charlie Plummer and Timothy Hutton.
ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD received three nominations at the Golden Globes: Ridley Scott for best director, Michelle Williams for lead actress in a drama and, Christopher Plummer for supporting actor.
ABOUT DANIEL PEMBERTON:
DANIEL PEMBERTON (Composer) is an Ivor Novello-winning and multi Golden Globe and BAFTA Award-nominated composer who has been regularly cited as one of the most exciting and original new voices working in modern film scoring today. Constantly working with some of the most renowned names in the industry All The Money In The World marks the third time the composer has collaborated with legendary director Ridley Scott. Featuring an 80 piece orchestra, detuned woodwinds, folk musicians recorded in rural Italy and innovative guitar and electronic textures as well as full choirs and individual soloists singing specifically translated texts it is a score that encompasses both the epic scale of the director’s vision as well as the powerful emotional beats behind the story itself.
Pemberton’s big break into feature films came after Scott was so impressed with his debut film score in 2011 for the period supernatural thriller “The Awakening” that he hired the composer to score his feature “The Counselor”. The pair collaborated again on Scott’s first directorial foray into television, “The Vatican” and the recent Watergate feature “Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House”, produced by Scott, directed by Peter Landesman and starring Liam Neeson.
His bold writing and unusual and innovative arrangements on scores for movies have seen the soundtracks constantly singled out for critical acclaim. Pemberton’s mix of opera and electronics for Danny Boyle's “Steve Jobs” (starring Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet) not only garnered him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score but so impressed writer Aaron Sorkin that Pemberton was invited to score his much anticipated directorial debut, the recently completed “Molly’s Game” (starring Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba).
Pemberton was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award - Best Original Song the following year for the song “Gold”, performed by Iggy Pop and from the film of the same name (for which he also composed the score) directed by Stephen Gaghan and starring Matthew McConaughey as well as Composer of the Year at the 2016 World Soundtrack Awards. MOLLY’S GAME
(January 4 – New York, NY) Sony Classical proudly announces the release of MOLLY’S GAME (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring music by Daniel Pemberton. The soundtrack to Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut will be available on January 5, 2018. STXfilms and The Mark Gordon Company’s MOLLY’S GAME was released in select theaters in the U.S. on December 25th, and will expand wide on January 5, 2018.
“It was great working with Aaron - I still can’t believe this is his first time as a director - he was so assured, enthusiastic and supportive it felt like he’d been doing it all his life,” said Pemberton.
“When you’re directing a film for the first time—and I would imagine when you’re directing a film for the hundred and first time—you don’t want the top people involved to be soldiers who’ll carry out your instructions. You want them to be artists who are better than your instructions. At an early meeting with Daniel in Toronto, where much of MOLLY’S GAME was shot, I told the extraordinary composer that I wasn’t hearing electronic music in the score. Instead I wanted strings, reeds and brass—an orchestral sound. Daniel nodded, smiled his thousand-watt smile and said, ‘There will be electronic music,’” Sorkin joked. “Daniel became nothing less than a co-author of the film. And I’ll be forever grateful that he followed his instincts instead of my instructions.”
Starring Academy Award® nominee and Golden Globe Award winner Jessica Chastain, MOLLY'S GAME is based on the true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, played by Idris Elba, who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe.
Speaking to the dynamic score he crafted for this engaging true-life thriller, composer Daniel Pemberton said, "I wanted to write it so it felt a bit more like a bunch of different bands had written the score than rather a solitary film composer. I wanted it to feel like something that came from inside Molly’s world, the kind of music she would listen to or be surrounded by. It needed to feel contemporary, not like a traditional film score. But at the same time Aaron always wanted to give her a theme, one that would grow through the film into a big emotional resolution at the end, so it was important to work that into what I would do as well.”
