Every week, G-POP.net strives to bring you a variety of entertainment. Here's what's new for this week:
Rent: No Day But Today - a feature article by Justine Minners covering the many forms of the musical Rent - from the musical to the movie to the music.
Excerpt: "I don't think I know of a single person who has not heard the story behind the scenes of the phenomenon of the musical "Rent." A young, talented and hard-working musical writer by the name of Jonathon Larson gets turned down time after time before creating his masterpiece, "Rent." He gets it produced, and it is quickly on the fast track to being a hit. The day before it's debut in a downtown theater, Larson passes away of an aortic aneurism, and we are left with the haunting hit smash he wanted all his lifeand he never got to see it succeed. "Rent," in its frank discussion of life and death as an artist in Bohemia, is as fitting a tribute as any to its writer, and with the recent buzz surrounding the movie's upcoming DVD release, I felt the Broadway musical and the movie deserved some G-Pop treatment."
Epitaphs: 20 Tales of Dark Fantasy and Horror- Ismael Manzano reviews the fantasy / horror compilation edited by Tom Piccirilli & Edward J. McFadden III.
Excerpt: "My past experiences with reading and reviewing horror anthologies have been tedious, at best; so it was with a reluctant heart that I agreed to read Padwolf Publsihings, Epitaphs: 20 Tales of Dark Fantasy and Horror. I am grateful to all the writers involved in his anthology for adding a very positive experience to counteract the negative ones I've suffered through. Although I can not talk about all of the stories in this book, I would like to point out a few that stuck out in my head, the ones that made the best impressionsthough all were well done and worthwhile."
Something New - Jon Minners reviews the new movie starring Sanaa Lathan, Simon Baker and Blair Underwood/
Excerpt: "My name is Jon Minners and I date black women. No, it's not a confession. I am not at a meeting to help me for "my problem." I don't just look to date black women. I will date any beautiful girl that shows strength, independence and intelligence, but I am not as close minded as most people when it comes to dating; afraid to cross that dreaded line of color and culture that has already been diluted by the intermixing of African cultures, the intermixing of European cultures, and the cross-pollination that makes for the great melting pot in New York City. I am not afraid to try something new. And that is exactly the subject matter this film tackles; going out of the ordinary, not being afraid to follow your heart and getting past the obvious and not-so obvious differences that make us all individuals deserving of one another's time."
Powell's City of Books - Melissa Minners tells us all about the largest new and used book store in the United States.
Excerpt: "Powell's City of Books is a book lover's dream. Toted as the largest independent bookstore for new and used books in the United States, Powell's City of Books occupies an entire city block in Portland, Oregon (between NW 10th and 11th Avenue and Burnside and Couch Streets). The store is open year round and buys thousands of used books daily to ensure that the shelves stay well-stocked."
Kill Devil - Jon Minners reviews the upcoming Asia Vision film.
Excerpt: "Urban Vision has always been a friend to me. I could always count on them for some of the best anime titles; whether it is Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll: The Series or Golgo 13. They nail it every single time and when they decided to create a new live-action Asian film imprint, I was excited for that very reason. They never steered me wrong before and Azumi already looks like it will be a great film when that comes out. Then they released Hideo Nakata's Curse, Death & Spirit and their streak remained intact. Now, I am faced with the misfortune of having to tell them about their latest film, the brutal Japanese slasher film Kill Devil. "What do you think?" Do you really want to know?"
The Swear - Every Trick's A Good One - Melissa Minners reviews the rock band's debut album.
Excerpt: "On first glance, one could say that The Swear certainly has the look of a great rock band, but do they have what it takes to make it in the harsh reality of the music business. And then you listen to their music and discover that they have everything it takes and more. Their debut album, Every Trick's A Good One, is an EP consisting of six tracks. The CD is basically a sample of their wares, but what a sample!"
