Every week, G-POP.net strives to bring you a variety of entertainment. Here's what's new for this week:
4400: The Complete First Season - Justine Manzano reviews the 1st season of the hit show 4400 on DVD.
Excerpt: "I never heard of The 4400 when it initially aired. It snuck by me without a word in what could be one of USA Network's most under developed marketing campaigns ever. I went on never knowing it existed until I began seeing commercials for Season 2. I heard of the premise and I was hooked. I needed to know more. Schedule conflicts kept me away from catching the Second Season in entirety when it aired, as well as a crappy VCR (thank God for DVRs), but the little bit I caught reeled me in, lost as I was without the first season to back me up. Thankfully, it was available on DVDso, I checked it out and I've got to say, the show is even better when you can actually understand what's going on!"
Noella Choi - a feature article written by Melissa Minners about a singer / songwriter with a career on the rise.
Excerpt: "I first heard of Noella Choi two years ago when I was offered the opportunity to review her album Restless. Back then, I remember being amazed at the statement that the singer / songwriter made on the album cover, saying that it took her two years to create the album because she is not the best lyricist in the world. I remember being astounded, as the lyrics were some of the best I had heard in a long while...I recently had the opportunity to speak with Noella Choi about where her career has taken her over the past two years. Complacency is not a word in Noella Choi's dictionary."
Tyler Perry: Movies with Heart - Jon Minners reviews two hit movies by Tyler Perry - Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Madea's Family Reunion.
Excerpt: "Tyler Perry does not make formulaic movies. He makes real cultural masterpieces that truly examine almost every element of black culture. At the heart of that culture is religion and family. And originally created as a series of plays, all the titles in the Tyler Perry collection examine every aspect of this culture; the good, the bad, the ugly and everything in between. This is a real slice of American life and whether you like it or not, millions of Americans can't be wrong. Perry didn't follow the Steven Spielbergs, the Martin Scorseses or the Spike Lees for that matter; he created a new formula for your audience. Real recognizes real and everyone who leaves a Tyler Perry movie will experience a rollercoaster ride of emotions they will never forget and look forward to riding again and again."
An American Werewolf In London - A Turn Back the Clock review of the movie by Ismael Manzano.
Excerpt: "Loyal fan, I am on a mission. It came to my attention recently that some of the movies that I've grown up with, adore and revere have gone unnoticed by the younger generation and my peers alike. Films that I always thought of as pieces of Americana, to others, are barely recognizable names from a blurred past, or worst, forgotten originals of poorly done remakes. Case in point: An American Werewolf in London (1981). I couldn't believe it when I heard people my own age talking about American Werewolf in Paristhe 1997 sequelas if it had been the original. Now, while 'Paris,' wasn't a bad movie, it failed to live up to the magic of the first movieeven though it sold a lot of its gimmicks from 'London.' So, I'm here to review an old favorite, in the hopes of rekindling your interest and putting 'London' where it should have been all along, prominently displayed in the analogs of Americana, as one of the greatest, bad horror movies of all timesseconded, of course, by Bruce Campbell's Evil Dead movies."
Bronx Born Singer Voted Out Of American Idol - Jon Minners gives us a glimpse into the life of American Idol contestant Brenna Gethers.
Excerpt: "Brenna Gethers had the look, style and abilities to be the next American Idol, but if she had won the coveted title and subsequent recording contract, she would owe it all to her unique attitude, an attitude that has its roots firmly entrenched in the Bronx; an attitude that, although she didn't win the competition, will still make her famous."
Calvary: Hell's Seed - Ismael Manzano reviews the fantasy / horror novel by Theodis Moore, Jr.
Excerpt: "I've had the pleasure of reviewing a handful of books from the print on demand company, Publish America. And while some books were not to my likingto say the leastothers were truly enjoyable. Calvary "Hell's Seed," by Theodis Moore Jr. marks the last of my current crop of material from Publish America, and I must say that I am glad that my final read from them was an enjoyable one."
