Every week, G-POP.net strives to bring you a variety of entertainment. Here's what's new for this week:
No Time For Kings - Ismael Manzano reviews the novle by Thomas Hank.
Excerpt: "My main problem with the story, however, wasnt the confusing flashback narrative, the annoying protagonist or every characters penchant for forgetting to use the pronoun I while speaking. My main problem was the plot. I felt I was being led somewhere, only to end up somewhere else, in a place I did not want to be, while being told, Its just as good. There was no payoff to all the apparent build up in the story. While I like bold chances, and the ending was bold in that it wasnt what Id expected, it fell flat behind its not-so-veiled message and cautionary advice. The intent, Im sure was to make the reader think, but all it did, was frustrate me. I felt the story could have been salvaged by a more traditional ending."
I-Con Turns 25 - Jon Minners writes about the 25th Anniversary of the I-CON Convention.
Excerpt: "I had a strange dream. Mike Donovan, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Starbuck, Cornelius, a Cylon, a Klingon, a Vulcan, a Wookie, Buck Rogers, Captain Kirk and Inuyasha were in the same room together with hundreds of people around singing happy birthday, as the eclectic sci-fi icons blew out the candles to mark a milestone occasion. And while that was just a dream, the reality of the situation was clear as hundreds of science fiction buffs (close to 6,000 to be exact) lined up outside SUNY Stony Brook on the weekend of March 23, some in complete costumes, from anime attire to sci-fi regalia, to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the highly anticipated I-Con convention."
I-CON 25: The Review - Melissa Minners reviews I-CON 25, a convention that took place on March 24-26, 2006.
Excerpt: "With I-CON 24 having been somewhat of a disappointment for me, I was somewhat apprehensive about attending I-CON 25. Going to the I-CON had become somewhat of a tradition, but I wasnt certain that I would want to attend more than one day as I had on previous occasions. The only saving grace this I-CON was a special number: number 25. My first I-CON was I-CON 20 and it was a great deal of fun. The succeeding I-CONs were decent, but lacked something of the first one I attended. I had hopes for this I-CON, being the 25th anniversary of the event. My hopes were answered."
Mr. & Mrs. Smith - Justine Manzano reviews the DVD version of the action comedy starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
Excerpt: "Last week I told you that you shouldnt care about Brangelinas baby and I meant it, but what you should care about is when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (Those nicknames are stupid, anyhow) make an awesome movie together. Thats whats important, because they are actors! Though I had a qualm or two about their time playing John and Jane Smith, as there were moments of continuity that left something to be desired, this was a fun and sexy action flick with great characters. I think they came out of this one with their performance credibility (if not their personal lives) in tact."
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - Melissa Minners reviews the Musical Thriller Soundtrack starring Michael Cerveris and Patti Lapone distributed by Nonesuch Records.
Excerpt: "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has been performed on the stage as early as the 19th Century. However, this particular production of the thriller is unique in that it is minimally staged. Cast members do double duty as musicians for the show. Therefore, there is no orchestral accompaniment rare for a Broadway musical indeed. Stephen Sondheim has outdone himself, creating music and lyrics that evoke a mixture of contrasting emotions from his listeners."
Munto 2: Beyond the Walls of Time - Jon Minners reviews the new anime DVD released by Central Park Media.
Excerpt:"From the key animator of the critically acclaimed Grave of the Fireflies and the groundbreaking AKIRA and the producer of Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid, comes an interesting new anime about two young people from different worlds who need each other in order to survive."
Birds of Prey: Between Dark & Dawn - Melissa Minners reviews the latest Birds of Prey Trade Paperback from DC Comics.
Excerpt: "Can Oracle win her battle against an enemy that only she can see? Will Huntress survive her battle with Vixen? What does the Second Heaven cult have planned for the meta-humans in their possession? What is behind the strange rash of suicides in New Gotham? Youll have to pick up Birds of Prey: Between Dark & Dawn to find out! At the price of $14.99, trust me, you will not be disappointed!!"
All of our columns are new this week:
Minners Commentary Corner: Dont Let Them Control You - "They are trying to control you. Yes, the government; Democrat or Republican is employing old strategies to control the population through fear."
Random Acts of Ismael: Nicole Kidman: Please Take Tom Cruise Back - " I am pleadingBEGGINGfor Nicole Kidman to take Tom Cruise back. Do whatever you have to do. Beg, bribe, blackmail, but for Gods sake, do something! Im sick of him! Sick of him jumping on couches; sick of him robbing Katie Holmes cradle; sick of him blasting new reporters; sick of him opening his mouth about other peoples choices in dealing with depression; sick of him preaching about Scientology; and sick to death of him using his power to get his way!"
Badseed's Bottomline #365: Wrestlemania 22 Not Really the Big Time - "Hey yo! I am trying to get excited about Wrestlemania, but it is hard. I found a way. For the first time ever, I am throwing a Wrestlemania party and I am inviting this girl who is smoking hot and actually likes wrestling, my boy and his girl and my sister and her husband and we will make it a fun time even though this PPV will not really be the big time show it advertises itself to be. But lets try to make the most of it."
