Every week, G-POP.net strives to bring you a variety of entertainment. Here's what's new for this week:
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King - Ismael Manzano reviews the Playstation 2 version of the game.
Excerpt: "My experience with Dragon Quest began way back in winter of 1989, when the very first RPG ever, Dragon Warriorlater known as Dragon Questwas first released in the States. It was two days after Christmas and I was itching to spend my hard-received money on some cool, state of the art 8-bit games for my Nintendo. While in a local store, my brother pointed out a game called Dragon Warriors and suggested that I get itI was big on dragon related things back then. I looked at the back of the box, scoffed and said, quite obnoxiously, that it looked like crap to me. Well, the store owner didnt waste any time admonishing me for my stupid, commentary of a great game. Thoroughly embarrassed, I did the only thing I could: I bought the game. To my delight, the game was better than the store owner had attested. I was hooked. I played the game late at night, woke up early to sneak in extra play before school and pretty much put every nonessential activity on hold while I leveled up, collected armor and defeated slime. So you can imagine my surprise when, last year, I learned that the upcoming Dragon Quest VIII was actually a sequel to that old 8-bit game. As I had seventeen years earlier, I collected my Christmas money, ran to the local store, and bought my game, hoping that this game lived up to the original, so that I might have a chance to redeem my previous ignorant critique of this games ancestor."
Wreck of the Day - Justine Manzano reviews the debut release by Anna Nalick.
Excerpt: "You come home from whatever stress youve been facing for the better half of your day, let the CD play and run the gamut of emotions with the artist until you are left at the end with a soft smile on your face, feeling a lot better than you had before youd hit the Play button. You consider taking the CD out of your playerits been two months since youve removed it. Hasnt it gotten enough play? You do have other CDs. Perhaps you should listen to those. But as you pull out your old faithful Crossroads by Bon Jovi, you cant seem to switch the CD out. You almost feel guilty. You love all your CDs but you cant help neglecting them. You tell yourself youll listen to it for a couple of more weeks before it becomes relegated to the spinneryou lie. This is the effect that Anna Nalicks Wreck of the Day has."
Happiness Is Baseball Opening Day! - Melissa Minners tells the world what baseball's opening day means to her.
Excerpt: "Football fans will scoff at me. Hockey fans will snort. Basketball and soccer fans will walk away in disgust. I dont care. Opening day of the baseball season equals happiness and I dont care who doesnt share my opinion. Each year, I mourn the last day of the baseball post-season. Every year, I wait patiently for months until the day that pitchers and catchers head off to spring training. I check out the scores of the spring training games, yearning for the first day of the official season. I mark the date down on my calendar and count down until the fateful day when the new season will begin. And then it happens opening day!..."
Metadox brings Metal back to the Bronx - Jon Minners writes about the heavy metal band from the Bronx.
Excerpt: "Who said Metal was dead? While groups like Megadeth, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and the Metallica of old have fizzled from existence, their memory remains and a new crop of Heavy Metal bands like Trivium and In Flames are leading the charge to bring back Metal to the masses. One band answering their call is a Bronx-based band called Metadox.?
Dark Wisdom: The Magazine of Dark Fiction - Melissa Minners reviews the dark fiction magazine from Elder Signs Press, Inc.
Excerpt:"From across the room, I spotted the cover art of Dark Wisdom, Issue #8, and was instantly captivated. The tentacled alien being with multiple eyes and a multitude of fangs pulled me in, daring me to ask, Whats this all about? I picked up an issue and soon had my answer. Dark Wisdom is a compilation of science fiction and horror stories, fiction, film and gaming reviews, interviews, commentaries, poetry and more. The authors of the works presented in this 80-page volume come from a number of sources including both celebrated authors and average folks just like you and me."
Kokkuri - Jon Minners reviews the latest horror DVD distributed by AsiaVision.
Excerpt: "AsiaVision has just made an impact in the live action Japanese import market and it has had its hits with Curse, Death, Spirit; a well crafted anthology of Twilight Zone-like horror; and its misses in the form of Kill Devil, an attempt at a hip version of Battle Royale, which came up short. With the saying going that the third times the charm, I had high hopes for their latest release Kokkuri, but the film did not meet my expectations it exceeded them."
Badseed's Bottomline is all new this week:
Excerpt: "Hey yo! So Wrestlemania has ended and I was right to be skeptical of this card. It did not look good on paper and it was not really a good show at all. Let me rephrase thatit was not a good Wrestlemania, because if this was Backlash or Armageddon, this PPV would have been great. I paid $50 for this. I feel really cheated. Lets get into the show"
