Every week, G-POP.net strives to bring you a variety of entertainment. Here's what's new for this week:
Dragon Warrior - A Turn Back The Clock review by Ismael Manzano of the classic Nintendo game.
Excerpt: "In a previous article, I reviewed the game Dragon Quest VIII, for the Playstation 2. In that review, I mentioned my love for an older version of that game, the great-great-great-great-great-grandfather of Dragon Quest VIII, Dragon Warrior, for the NES. Naturally, the nostalgia got the better of me, so I searched the internet until I found the old Nintendo game available for sale and I bought it, eager to relive my childhood obsession."
Beth Abraham Hosts Recording For Recovery CD Release - Jon Minners reviews Recording for Recovery, a music CD featuring patients from Beth Abrahams Institute for Music and Neurologic Function.
Excerpt: "Three years ago, three men broke into Jeremy Deliottes apartment, assaulted him, set him on fire and left him to die. He survived, but both his arms were so badly injured, they had to be amputated. Others would have given up, but Deliotte began a long road to recovery at Beth Abrahams Institute for Music and Neurologic Function, creating personally, meaningful music, and building on the reach of music to compensate for his lost ability to feel the world with his hands. Deliottes story is just one of a dozen equally touching stories surrounding the artists on the unique music CD entitled Recording for Recovery. The CD, featuring patients at the IMNF, as part of the Music Has Power organization, was debuted at a release party on Friday, April 28, at Beth Abraham Health Services on Allerton Avenue in the Bronx."
The Notebook DVD - Melissa Minners reviews the movie based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks.
Excerpt: "Presented by New Line Cinema, The Notebook, starring Ryan Gossling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands, is a film based on the romance novel written by Nicholas Sparks. Throughout the movie, Duke, played by James Garner, reads to fellow nursing home resident, played by Gena Rowlands, out of a worn old notebook. He tells her a tale of two star-crossed lovers Noah and Allie, played by Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, and how their love stood the test of time. As Duke reads his tale, we can see that it is very special to him. There is something in the way that he looks at Mrs. Hamilton. that speaks of a silent yearning and hopefulness. Little by little, viewers become personally invested in the outcome of events for both Noah and Allie and Duke and Mrs. Hamilton."
The Notebook - The Novel - Melissa Minners reviews the novel by Nicholas Sparks that inspired the movie.
Excerpt: "The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks is a story about a love that stands the test of time. The story begins in a Nursing Home in North Carolina. An elderly resident named Duke begins reading to fellow resident out of a faded and worn notebook, in hopes to jog some memory from her about their past. The story he reads is about two star-crossed lovers, Noah and Allie, who meet in 1946."
Armored Trooper VOTOMS Stage 2: Kunmen Jungle Wars - Jon Minners reviews the second set of DVDs released by Central Park Media containing Episodes 14-27 of the classic mecha series.
Excerpt: "The year of the VOTOMS continues! Last month, Central Park Media released the second set in the much anticipated 52-episode classic mecha series Armored Trooper VOTOMS with the next two sets being released later in the year. For well schooled anime fans, this is a great chance to collect and get reacquainted with the entire series and for newbies, Central Park Media has just provided you with an opportunity of a lifetime; to discover a classic anime and not have to wait long to fully understand the complex storyline. Almost quicker than an entire season of 24, viewers will never miss a beat and get to enjoy the intense adventures of Chirico Cuvie and the friends he makes along the way without all the anxiety of having to wait too long for the next release."
Runners: Bad Goods - Melissa Minners reviews the trade paperback compilation of the sci-fi / adventure comic book series by Sean Wang.
Excerpt: "According to artist / writer Sean Wangs bio, he has always been something of a rebel: Defying a high school aptitude test that recommended artsy unconventional careers like stuntman, DJ, dancer and puppeteer, Sean Wang went to MIT where he got a degree in architecture. Upon graduation, he immediately squandered that education by pursuing work in comics. Obviously, Sean Wang has always had a background in artistry. A squandered education? Judging by the artistry and inventiveness found in his sci-fi / adventure comic book series, Runners, one could hardly agree with that assessment."
D.O.R.K. - Melissa Minners reviews the self-titled CD of the alternative rock band.
Excerpt: "Just a glance at the name of the band and you cant help but laugh a bit. After all, we all remember calling someone D.O.R.K. at one time or another. I thought about this after I received the bands self-titled EP and wondered at the marketing genius behind the selection of the bands name. I also wondered what music I was about to be listening to. The five-man band named D.O.R.K. thinks pretty highly of itself: Man, DORK is probably the most amazing band ever! exclaimed your mother. However, we all have learned that thinking highly of ones own talents doesnt exactly make you a star. Or havent we seen enough egotistical failures on American Idol season after season. As it turns out, I had nothing to worry about. D.O.R.K. has every right to toot its own horn."
All of our columns are new this week:
Minners Commentary Corner: Oh, Were Never Gonna SurviveUnless, We Get A Little Crazy - "We live in a stressful world. I know I do. And sometimes, after a long days work, we just have a lot to say. And sometimes, what we have to say is not considered very normal. Im odd; this I know, but you love me all the same. So, I am watching Lost the other night and it struck me Lost is a mixture of Gilligans Island andget thisLand of the Lost. Oh, stop your catcalls. If you think about it, you know I am right. The writers on Gilligans Island ran into the same problems as those on Lost. Were going to run out of ideas unless we give them cool stuff to play with..."
Random Acts of Ismael: I Probably Hate You Because... - "Attention! Attention! Back by popular demand, I bring to you another pointless rant about random thoughts that are floating around in my dysfunctional head. Theres really no order to these, save for the common link that I really do hate everybody. Im not joking. Im not being witty or cool. I really hate everybody. For the record, I have a handful of friendsif half my hand had been blown away by a firecrackerand I dont need or want anymore. Anyone else who isnt in my mangled circle of non-hated people fall into the highly exclusive club of people whom I detest with all my being. Below are a few examples of the excuses I use to justify my unreasonable and groundless resentment..."
Badseed's Bottomline #371: Confused!!! - "Hey yo! Is it just me or is wrestling just confusing these days. The only storyline I am completely into is HHH, HBK and John Cena. The confusing angle is all that makes sense in the WWE. I love how HHH came out and it looked like he was going to save HBK, but hit John Cena with the pedigree instead, since John Cena had already cleared house. The DX chop was such a blast from the past. Now, he is rewarded with a title shot, but I get where this is going. HHH defied Vince again, so next week, Vince screws HHH by helping John Cena win. John Cena tears apart the fans for turning on him and when HBK tries to talk some sense into him, John Cena attacks him, too, leading to a DX reunion against John Cena and his Spirit Squad. John Cena is going to need more back than that, but cant you see John Cena vs. RVD at ECW One Night Stand with the Spirit Squad attacking and all the ECW wrestlers destroying them? That would be awesome."
