Each and every week, G-POP.net strives to bring you a variety of entertainment. Here's what's new for this week:
NBC's and CBS's Fall 2005-2006 Television Seasons: What Worked and What Sucked - Justine Manzano continues her series of reviews regarding the Fall 2005 Television Season. This week - NBC and CBS.
Excerpt: "Hello again, everybody out in TV world! Last week, we discussed in detail what worked and what sucked in the last season of TV that ABC produced for us. Now, we move on to the wonderful worlds of CBS or the Central Broadcasting Station and NBC the National Broadcasting Company to see what had us cheering and groaning last season. Yep, in these hot summer months, a TV recap is just what we need to cool off. Ahhh.remember the Fall when you could only just imagine these shows? What a beautiful thing."
Mary Ellen Mark: Exposure - Kristy Caruso reviews a book compiling some of the works of reknown documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark.
Excerpt: "The average person is not a connoisseur of fine art photography. Ever hear of Steven Meisel? Richard Avedon? Annie Liebovitz? Maybe, maybe not. No bothers here-you don't have to know your stuff to know that Exposure, Mary Ellen Mark's latest masterpiece, is poignant, effective, and will leave an impression. Marks pictures are a celebration of humanity in its most diverse and eccentric forms-something anyone can (and will) appreciate..."
Local Production Company Hits The Big Time With Cult Favorite 24 Star - Jon Minners discusses the new film by a Bronx production company in collaboration with Louis Lombardi (Edgar of the series '24').
Excerpt: "Remember the look on your face when you were watching the Emmy Award winning show 24 and suddenly you realized one character was not going to make it. He may not have been a major player, but Edgar, played by the Bronx own Louis Lombardi became a cult favorite and a sentimental hero who we all wanted to see live through the end and stake his claim with Chloe. So, when he passed out from nerve poisoning, the hearts of many 24 fans sank in sadness. But dont feel too bad. The computer geek is using his keyboard for a different reason and is turning in his nerdy ways for a traditional Italian story and he is doing it with a Bronx production company on the rise."
The Godfather: Part I & II - A Turn Back the Clock movie review of the award winning 1970's films that tell the tale of a fictional mafia family and their rise to power.
Excerpt: "When I was a young child, a spectacular television event took place. It was the airing of the Godfather epic. For the first time since the movies showed in the theaters (1972 and 1974 respectively), the two movies were combined to show the tale in chronological order. Everyone was talking about it. Of course, in 1977, I was deemed way too young to view such a violent movie. Back then, if a movie had a rating of R for sex and violence, chances were that, unless the kid snuck into the theater to see the flick, you were just going to have to wait until you were deemed old enough for the rating...Recently, a cable channel ran The Godfather marathon. I happened to catch bits and pieces of the marathon and was intrigued. A friend of mine lent me the video version of The Godfather: Part I & II, the version that my parents saw when I was a wee lass. Only two hours into the six hour tale, I was completely hooked."
Nightingale's Lament - Ismael Manzano reviews the novel written by Simon R. Green.
Excerpt: " For those of you whove kept track, this is the third book in Simon R. Greens Nightside series that I have reviewed for g-pop.net. Yes, I couldnt help myself; I delved once again into the dark, twisted, sometimes humorous world of the Nightside by reading Nightingales Lament."
One Day Left - Melissa Minners reviews the Rock, Metal Meets Rap, Hip-Hop band.
Excerpt: "In 2002, six men came together with the idea to turn the music world on its ear. They called themselves One Day Left and they are well on their way to making that happen. The band members met via newspaper ads and discovered that each person had the same goal to make their mark on the music scene. To that end, they brought together two incredibly diverse sounds and created a new, daring, incredibly hard-hitting mix. Think rock/metal meets rap/hip-hop and youll get my meaning. The idea has been tried by bands before Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and more but somehow, these bands lacked the harsh, raw component that One Day Left has created."
All of our columns are new this week:
Minners Commentary Corner: Things You Never Forget XIII: Hi Ho Hi Ho; Its Off to Work I Go - "This column sort of blows, but it sets up nicely for the future, so read it anyways. Hard working clerks will feel me. So, I got a job. I was now a Carvel Ice Cream store clerk and I was excited. On my first day of work, I was working the 12 to 4 p.m. shift and I got up at 9 a.m.; showered up, shaved, made myself look presentable and showed up 30 minutes earlier than expected. I needed to look good and I dont think in the six years I worked there, I was ever late more than five times and the amount of times I was early more than made up for it..."
Random Acts of Ismael: I, Mutant - " Ladies and gentlemen, my loyal weblander, I come to you today with joyous news for every geek, dweeb, and dork, who ever lusted over the pages of an X-men comic book and wished they could be a mutant. Well, the future is here! Yes, mutants are among us! How do I know? Well, because I am one! Thats right, my doctor confirmed it; I am a mutant, complete with a genetic abnormality..."
Badseed's Bottomline #375: ECW: One Night Stand - "Hey yo! I made it to issue #375 and there are only 25 more columns until the big 400. Damn. Thats a lot of columns. I am so feeling old right now, but everything old is new again and ECW is back this weekend. Yes, they showed signs of life on Raw and Smackdown over the last few weeks, but this weekend kick starts ECW: Version 2.0. I cant believe this.
