Each and every week at G-POP.net, we strive to bring you a tremendous variety of entertainment. Here's what's new for this week's issue:
First Impressions: Brothers and Sisters / The Nine - In this installment of First Impressions, Ismael Manzano gives us his impressions of two new ABC series, Brothers and Sisters and The Nine.
Excerpt: "I come to you all again, live—well actually, a week late—with my fifth installment of First Impressions, a series that deals with my initial thoughts on brand new television series. This week I bring you too good shows: ABC's Wednesday night hit, The Nine, and ABC's Sunday night hit, Brothers and Sisters. Now that you know the particulars, let's dive right in, shall we?"
Earth X - Jon Minners reviews the graphic novel compilation of the 14-part series by Marvel Comics.
Excerpt: "Marvel's Earth X is another alternate universe spin from the mind of comic book great Alex Ross, who was behind the uniquely and somewhat similar DC title, Kingdom Come. Ross derived this story's concept and with him was Jim Krueger. The duo put together a 14-part series that debuted in 1999 and was bounded in an astounding 472-page volume, complete with all the original art, dialogue and exciting adventure."
A Challenge to Style From The Stylistically Challenged, Part One: Childish Sentiments - Justine Manzano's feature series on the definition of style.
Excerpt: "I've never been conventional and I've never been ordinary—and I've never heard the end of it. If a person's lifestyle and their sense of style was determined by their cultural and social surroundings, then I was anti-style, stylistically challenged, as it were. Which begs the question, if I am the definition of a lack of style, what is style, and how can I change it?"
Future Stars: Sean Wang - Melissa Minners takes a look a comic artist Sean Wang in this Future Stars feature.
Excerpt: "Since meeting Sean Wang at I-Con 25 and reading his graphic novel, Runners, I have become very impressed with his body of work and intrigued by his style as an artist. Especially after reading his website bio: "Defying a high school aptitude test that recommended artsy unconventional careers like stuntman, DJ, dancer and puppeteer, Sean Wang went to MIT where he got a degree in architecture. Upon graduation, he immediately squandered that education by pursuing work in comics." It takes a great deal of strength to walk away from a conventional job and follow your dreams. Many fail such an attempt, but Sean Wang has proven that he is more than just another dreamer."
National Lampoon announces DVD of the Month Club - Jon Minners discusses the new DVD club from National Lampoon.
Excerpt: "Here is something that just seems out of the ordinary. National Lampoon's movies are known far and wide. The company that made classics like National Lampoon's Animal House, Vacation, European Vacation and Van Wilder, along with their recent Strip Poker series, has decided to dabble in the DVD club business. National Lampoon's new DVD-of-the-Month Club, which can be found by logging in to www.NLdvdClub.com, is supposed to, according to the company, make it easy for movie fans to get fresh, laugh-out-loud comedy every month. The fear is that the recently launched National Lampoon DVD Club is supposed to "showcase the funniest comedy movies that didn't come to a theater near you" and delivers each month's selection directly to your home."
Bronx Primitive: Portraits in Childhood - Melissa Minners reviews Kate Simon's memoir of her early years.
Excerpt: "Having recently read Bronx Accent: A Literary and Pictorial History of the Borough, I was immediately taken by some of the literary quotes. I resolved to gather up and read as many of the books mentioned in Bronx Accent as I could. One particular account of life in the Bronx that was quoted quite often in Bronx Accent came from a memoir written by Kate Simon called Bronx Primitive. While I was reading Bronx Accent, the title of Kate Simon's book nagged at me. Didn't I know this book? Hadn't I read it during my school years? Shortly after completing Bronx Accent, I took a look at the expansive library contained in my overflowing bookshelves and discovered that I did indeed own the book in question. But had I read it? The fact that I couldn't recall any of the passages quoted in the Bronx Accent book proved to me that I had not. I can only assume that I purchased this book for a college course and that we never got to it. How had a book languished in my library for so long without a page having been turned? The answer is a mystery to me, avid reader that I am. I decided that the book deserved much more respect than I had previously afforded it and made it one of two books I read over my vacation."
Random Acts of Ismael and Badseed's Bottomline are all new:
Eye Spy With My Little Eye - "Okay, weblanders and loyal fan. Those of you who have grown accustomed to a certain level of professionalism, a witty flare, a satirical slant on topics, or just plain funny comments from yours truly, look away from the computer screen now. These will—most likely—not be one of those rants. This one rant, like the name implies, will be me, bare naked, airing my current grievance for all of you to be forced to read. No witty flare, no satirical slants, no funny comments—unless I just can't help myself…because, let's face it, I'm a charming individual—No! This rant is about me and my problems. If you have problems of your own, so what! I'm not you. I never will be you! And you—thank goodness—will never be me! So since I don't live with your problems, sit back and enjoy mine! Why? Well…because I'm telling you to…Isn't that what you agreed to do—listen to my rants—when you elected me supreme god of all things G-Pop? Oh…that didn't happen…too bad. Shut up and listen."
Badseed's Bottomline #393: A Discussion for the Confused - "Hey yo! So, I think wrestling was somewhat interesting this week. I don't know what to think and therefore, I will just let it all hang out with this week's column."
