Yup, while everyone out there was worrying whether or not they would remember to set the clocks back, we were super busy making sure we would have a terrific new edition of G-POP for you to read after your extra hour of sleep! Here's what's new for this week's issue:
The Grudge 2 - Jon Minners reviews the sequel to the horror film based on the Japanese horror flick Ju-on.
Excerpt: "To say The Grudge 2 was a joke would be putting it mildly. After seeing the first movie twice and contributing to the wildly successful run it had two years ago, the second one was a given, but no one could have expected that the film would surpass Wedding Crashers as the funniest movie ever. The only problem is, Grudge 2 was meant to be a horror film. When you have more laughs than screams of terror, you have a failure on your hands..."
A Challenge to Style From The Stylistically Challenged, Part Three: A Not-So-Desperate Non-Housewife - The third and final installment of Justine Manzano's feature series on the definition of style.
Excerpt: "Welcome to the third and final part of my Definition of Style--dedicated to anyone who has ever been asked if they do dishes....My father wanted me to be a doctor when I grew up. I never wanted a job that serious. He used to tell me that my science grades were perfect to be a doctor—it didn't matter that the sight of blood makes me faint or that medical dramas like "ER" make me cringe. Those were all things I would get over. For now, I was meant to pursue science. Many years later, I can't help but wonder if it counts that my closest friend is studying to be a nurse..."
The Departed - Ismael Manzano reviews the Martin Scorsese crime/action/drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson.
Excerpt: "Last week I found myself in the annoying position of having four hours to kill in the city before school. It didn't make any sense to go home just to have to head back into the city less than an hour later, so I decided to catch a movie. I wish I could say that my choice to see Warner Bros' The Departed spoke of my keen eye for good movies, but the truth is, at two hours and change, it was the longest movie playing, hence watching it would eat up more time before school..."
Serenada Schizophrana - Melissa Minners reviews the latest album from composer Danny Elfman.
Excerpt: "Composer Danny Elfman has gained worldwide recognition as the creator of some of the most popular movie soundtracks in the industry today...Examples of past works include the soundtracks for Batman.., Spiderman.., Beetlejuice.., The Nightmare Before Christmas.., Desperate Housewives.., Pee Wee's Playhouse, Point Pleasant, Big Fish.., and more. Receiving a commission from the American Composers Orchestra in New York, Danny Elfman embarked on an entirely new journey into a world in which there were no visuals to draw on for inspiration. The resulting product of this venture turned out to be six movements compiled into one piece called Serenada Schizophrana, which was first performed at Carnegie Hall in February 2005..."
Zombie Hunters - Ismael Manzano reviews the web comic from Jenny Romanchuk.
Excerpt: "I was tapped to review the Web Comic, www.thezombiehunters.com by the elusive Melissa Minners, and, being that I'd never done a review for a Web Comic, I took the job with a smile and a stomach full of nerves. First I'd like to give credit where credit is do and drop the names of the creators of the site: Jenny, Dan, Katie, Maureen, and Sammie, five college students working together to make something for others to enjoy. I'd also like to note that five out of the six characters are named and modeled after the aforementioned creators..."
Point Clear - Melissa Minners reviews the latest novel from writer Jennifer Paddock.
Excerpt: "Point Clear by Jennifer Paddock centers around Caroline Berry, a woman who has lost herself to a mundane existence with little direction. Caroline had come to New York City from Tulsa, Oklahoma, in dreams of becoming a writer. Years later, she finds that her dreams have been set aside. She now works at two rather unsatisfying jobs and suffers from an ever-intensifying case of vertigo. When Caroline earns a substantial inheritance from her grandfather, she decides to make some changes in her life. She makes a three-week reservation to stay at an old southern hotel in Point Clear, Alabama, an old family favorite. In taking this trip, Caroline hopes to find some sense of direction for her life…a way to somehow get her life back on track..."
Professional Wrestling: Sport and Spectacle - Jon Minners reviews the thesis-project-turned-published-work by Sharon Mazor.
Excerpt: Professional Wrestling: Sport and Spectacle was a very interesting book. Sharon Mazer, who is now the head of the department of theater and film studies at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, originally wrote this as a thesis project, but afterwards, turned it into a finely crafted published work that was proudly brought to the masses by the University Press of Mississippi. Taken from her studies at WWE Hall of Fame star Johnny Rodz's Unpredictable School of Professional Wrestling at Gleason's Gym, Mazer examines the art of wrestling, going beyond the WWE, WCW and even GLOW and finally giving somewhat of a say to independent wrestlers looking to make a break..."
Random Acts of Ismael and Badseed's Bottomline are all new:
Random Acts of Ismael: Pop-Eye - "Recently, I wrote a rant about the discovery of my glaucoma problem entitled Eye Spy. For those of you who did not read it, you might as well not read this rant because I no longer like you and do not want to be your friend, associate with you, sleep over at your house, pet your dog, eat your food, bathe in your shower when you're are not home or leave cups of water with cream cheese on your dresser as you sleep—I actually did that last one to someone; don't ask me why, I did it in my sleep..."
Badseed's Bottomline #395: Bound for Greatness - "Hey yo! I ordered the TNA PPV this week. The last PPV I ordered on my own was ECW's One Night Stand. TNA's Bound for Glory had a killer lineup, one I could not ignore. This show was killer from start to finish with a couple exceptions in between. Let's explain..."
