Thanksgiving Day is around the corner and G-POP.net is still working to provide you with tons of entertainment! Here's what's new this week:
Stranger Than Fiction - Justine Manzano reviews the new comedy starring Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah and Emma Thompson.
Excerpt: "Every good writer feels a tad guilty about the things they have put their characters through. Sometimes, it's a divorce, sometimes, abuse. Most times, it's death. Every great writer walks around for a little while with the shadow of that death on their shoulders. Imaginitive creatures that we are, we theorize, rather existentially, that there are probably larger, greater beings, or being, depending on your belief system, who sit and script our lives, and, if that is the case, is scripting the lives we script leading to the inevitable death of a true, flesh and blood sentient creature? While most people will think, "No, you dummy! It's just a story," we writers take our creations very seriously. Stranger Than Fiction must have arisen from this very worry..."
Ghosts of Albion: Accursed - Ismael Manzano reviews the fantasy novel from Christopher Golden and Amber Benson.
Excerpt: "Ghosts of Albion: Accursed, was a purchase I made mostly because my wife is a huge Christopher Golden fan and has done some reviews for him in the past. I could only take her proud raving of his work but so long before I sought to read one for myself. I chose this one because it was co-written by Buffy alumni, Amber Benson—whom I love—and was curious to see what they could create together. .."
One World, One Heart - Melissa Minners reviews the poetry book from author Susan Polis Schutz and Blue Mountain Arts.
Excerpt: "Some time ago, a friend sent me a poetry book, knowing just how much I enjoy reading and writing poetry. Having read the book cover to cover, I find myself wanting to get my hands on numerous copies – to distribute the book to all that I know, so they can share in the experience..."
Perfect Blue - Jon Minners reviews the anime from Manga Entertainment and Satoshi Kon.
Excerpt: "Perfect Blue, from Manga Entertainment, and directed by Satoshi Kon, is both a very jarring look into the world of pop and a surreal slasher film, all in one. Putting everything you thought about anime movies on the backburner, Perfect Blue strives to be something different, following the story of a pop icon named Mima Kirigoe who leaves her girl group, Cham, to explore new opportunities in the world of acting and a solo singing career. It's sort of like Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, but with a whole lot more drama involved..."
Visions of New York City - Melissa Minners reviews the television special from WLIW New York providing aerial shots and information about the "City That Never Sleeps".
Excerpt: "Every time I begin to feel down about my surroundings…every time I lose sight of what it means to be a New Yorker, something comes around and puts things back into focus. Many New Yorkers…and a great many people living outside of New York…know only the down side of the city – the crime, the poverty, the seedy sections. Very few know the beauty that is "the city that never sleeps". The beauty of New York City is brought forth in an amazing new presentation from WLIW New York..."
Technology Meets Fashion: The New iPod Jacket - Jon Minners discusses the new iPod Jacket distributed by Kenpo.
Excerpt: "So, you're chilling on the train, blasting your iPod when suddenly, the Backstreet Boys come on in full blast. You, a man, likes the song, but you, a man, doesn't want the people near you to hear it, so you fumble quickly into your pockets to try and skip to the next song, but your fumbling has drawn undo attention onto yourself. Now they all know and the hot girl near by; she may like sensitive men, but not that sensitive, and you just lost that shot you thought you had when your eyes connected as she stepped on to the train. Imagine if you had one of these new iPod jackets from Kenpo..."
Minners Commentary Corner and Badseed's Bottomline are all new:
Minners Commentary Corner: What's Left to Enjoy? - "My wallet is empty. I'm not poor by any means, but by Wednesday of each week, sometimes earlier, there's nothing, but receipts and lint in my wallet. I don't know where the money goes, but it sure goes somewhere. Rent, electricity, cell phone, cable, regular phone, high-priced Internet…it just all seems to eat away at my wallet, your wallet and everyone's wallet; leaving us without much to enjoy. I refuse to live in squalor, because everyone else like me refuses to do the same. If all people like me; somewhere in the middle class area; decided to rent an apartment in a less stellar community, maybe I would follow, but right now, if you value your belongings or your life, high rents are to be expected..."
Badseed's Bottomline #398: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How? - "Hey yo!! So, I am caught back up on my wrestling, but I have a lot of questions. 1. Why do you book a show in England, where Roddy Piper and the Highlanders are over and have them both lose in the fashion in which they lost? That seems like bad booking to me. I mean, at least let Piper wrestle a little..."
