Ah, the holiday season is upon us...or for some of us, the holiday season has been thrust upon us! ;D Here's what's new this week at G-POP.net:
How Early Is Too Early? - Rushing the Holidays - Melissa Minners rants about the fact that the retail holiday season starts earlier and earlier each year.
Excerpt: "When I was a kid, I looked forward to the beginning of the holiday season...Times have changed. Commercial interests have taken things to the extreme! Don't get me wrong – these holidays have been commercialized for years. But things seem to have gotten out of hand of late...I've been noticing that the retail holiday season has begun earlier and earlier each year. I can see the desire to get the shopping started earlier. I, myself, begin to do my shopping in early fall simply because I loathe standing in line during the holiday rush, but lately, things are getting ridiculous..."
Andrew Lloyd Webber Divas - Melissa Minners reviews the soundtrack compilation featuring the many songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Excerpt: "Anyone who says that he or she has never heard of Andrew Lloyd Webber must have lived their entire life hiding under a rock, ears firmly kept closed. This is the only explanation as to how that particular person can honestly state that they have never heard any of the works of the most popular theatrical composer of the late 20th Century...Now, Decca Broadway releases a 15 track CD compilation of some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's best songs.... sung by such notables as Betty Buckley, Barbra Streisand, Minnie Driver, Madonna, and Glenn Close (to name a few)..."
Supernatural - Justine Manzano reviews the Season 1 DVD set from the hit television show, Supernatural.
Excerpt: "Sometimes you just watch a show because it's the right genre. Everybody does it. They turn on the TV and say, "Hey! This is a crime drama! I like crime dramas!" It doesn't matter if they've seen it before, know the characters or whether or not they've heard it sucks the big one—they'll try it. They may never watch it again, but they will definitely give it a shot. It's genre faith and, at times, it is blind. It's the reason why I initially watched Supernatural in the first place. And now, with the second season about to begin and the first season DVD sitting firmly in my DVD collection, it is hard to believe that I ever just watched this show, now one of my favorites, as a throw away..."
Batman in the Seventies - Melissa Minners reviews a trade paperback from a series that looks at the Batman and all of his character's changes throughout the decades.
Excerpt: "The name Batman has become synonymous with the term superhero. Just ask anyone, young or old, and they will be able to tell you numerous tales about the caped crusader. That's because Batman has been fighting crime for over 70 years! The costumed vigilante detective first came on the scene in the 1930s. Since then, the caped crusader has undergone many changes. A new series of trade paperbacks has sought to document these changes, compiling the best Batman comics from each decade and providing readers with important facts about Batman's personal and professional life during each particular decade, as well as supplying information about the writers and artists of that time period..."
Grave of the Fireflies - Jon Minners reviews a powerful new anime from Central Park Media.
Excerpt: "How much do we really know about World War II from the point of view of those who were our enemies? Japan has released several projects dealing with the war to end all wars. The manga series Adolf discussed the war and Japan's dealings with Germany and the soldiers who fought it. But no media could ever hope to compete with the gripping, emotional drama Grave of the Fireflies. You better bring a tissue...."
Magicians' Guild: Book One of the Black Magician Trilogy - Ismael Manzano review the first novel in a fantasy series written by Trudi Cavanan.
Excerpt: "Imagine living in a city where the powerful and elite make the rules and decide who's fit to life where. Imagine that these elite few command an army of magicians to do their bidding and enforce their laws. Now imagine that you just made enemies out of these magicians. In The Magicians' Guild, Trudi Canavan delves into a world of magic, politics and social caste systems. The book follows Sonea, a young resident of the mythical city of Imardin..."
Minners Commentary Corner and Badseed's Bottomline are all new:
Minners Commentary Corner: A Misconception of our Youth - "The Boston Red Sox agreed to pay $51 million just for the right to negotiate a deal with 26-year-old right-handed Japanese pitching star, Daisuke Matsuzaka. I mean, it Boggles the mind that baseball players are making so much money these days. The ways things are going, minimum wage in baseball will easily be $1 million before you know it. Jose Valentin is a good player, but not worth $3 million. I am really good at wiffle ball. Really good. I roof balls all the time. Give me $500,000. I'm worth it. Why am I working so hard when guys are being paid more money at a faster rate than I will ever see in my lifetime?..."
Badseed's Bottomline #400: 4-0-0 – Nuff Said - "Hey yo! Wow. 400 columns. It is really something else to realize that for almost eight years, I have been writing this wrestling column and the fans have been reading each week. Paul Nemer; I'd like to thank you so much for allowing me to write this commentary on wrestling for so long. Adam Martin has also been a great help. At one point, my column was on more than one site. I think at one point, my column graced 10 different news boards. But my emails would seem to come from Wrestleview readers and it made sense to stick with these two guys who brought me to the dance in the first place..."
