What's New At G-POP.net:
Celebrate Black History Month with G-POP.net:
Black Panther - Melissa Minners reviews the Oscar-nominated film based on the Marvel Comics character.
Excerpt: "I haven’t really been interested in seeing many of the movies out there based on Marvel Comics characters. I’ve seen a couple of recent X-Men flicks, the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, the first Iron Man film and some of the first Thor film, but really had no interest in seeing others…until Black Panther. Just the concept and the number of excellent actors involved in the film peaked my interest, but then I received the soundtrack and that sealed the deal. Unfortunately, I had to wait until quite some time after the film came out to get around to seeing it..."
Salt-N-Pepa - Melissa Minners Turns Back the Clock to talk about one of the first all-female rap groups.
Excerpt: "Music has always been a big part of my life. Whenever I think back to big events in my past, there’s always a thought as to what was playing on the radio at the time. My life has a soundtrack and each time I hear a song on the radio, I think back to what I was doing when I first heard that song. I love all kinds of music, but, it’s true that I have had my favorites over the years – artists whose music I never changed the station on and whose works I had to have in my possession. It would seem that some of those artists dominated portions of my musical life. If Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam were the soundtrack of my late 1980s, it’s fairly safe to say that Salt-N-Pepa were the soundtrack of my early 1990s. This was all brought back to me when I saw The Best of Salt-N-Pepa: The Millennium Collection for sale at FYE the other day..."
Becoming - Melissa Minners reviews the autobiography of Michelle Obama.
Excerpt: "Of all the Presidents' wives I've lived to see, none made such an impression on me than Michelle Obama. She seemed to be down to earth and intelligent, someone I would love to meet and get to know. Much dirt had been thrown at Barack and Michelle during the Presidential campaign and afterward, but Michelle seemed to endure it with a dignity and grace without being silent about it. I loved that about her. So, when I learned that Michelle Obama had written an autobiographical book called Becoming, I pre-ordered it as soon as the opportunity presented itself..."
March: Book One - Melissa Minners reviews the first trade paperback in a series about the Civil Rights Movement.
Excerpt: "I was recently offered an opportunity to check out the first in a trilogy of graphic novels documenting the Civil Rights Movement. A comic book about some of the most important historic events in the history of the United States? The history buff in me was definitely on board and so, I found myself downloading a copy of March: Book One..."
Roots - Melissa Minners Turns Back the Clock to review the ground-breaking miniseries about slavery in America.
Excerpt: "When I was a kid, an amazing, ground-breaking miniseries hit the television airwaves. Based on a book by Alex Haley, Roots centered on the struggles of his own family from the 1750suntil the end of the Civil War. I had caught glimpses of this series when it first aired in 1977, but wasn't really old enough yet to watch the whole thing. It wasn't until later, when it was re-televised on the ABC afternoon movie, that I got to see the whole miniseries and much later in life until I would read the book that it was based on. Many scenes stood out for me and I will always remember the poignancy of the miniseries, so when I saw the 30th Anniversary Edition of Roots on sale for a great price in a local store, I jumped on the opportunity to watch it again..."
The Harlem Hell Fighters - Melissa Minners reviews a graphic novel about an African American regiment that fought in the first World War.
Excerpt: "I was looking for things to review for the G-POP.net 2018 Black History Month page when I came across a graphic novel I had never heard before. It tells a fictionalized account of an African American regiment who fought in World War I. Now, we’ve all heard of the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II, but I must admit, The Harlem Hellfighters…well, I never heard of them, and I definitely wanted to learn more..."
