Happy New Year!! The G-POP.net staff have made their resolution for the new year - to boldly go where e-zines have never gone before in a quest to bring you the biggest variety of entertainment ever! So strap on your seatbelts! 2007's G-POP.net is gonna be one hell of an entertaining ride!
Here's what's new for this week:
The Pursuit of Happyness - Jon Minners reviews the new film inspired by a true story starring Will Smith.
Excerpt: "In the feel good time of the year, one need not look any further than the film, The Pursuit of Happyness. The name says it all. The Pursuit of Happyness is a film that will tug at your heart strings and leave you with a tear in your eye and a smile on your face..."
Sliders: Season 3 - Melissa Minners reviews the DVD compilation of the third season of the sci-fi television favorite.
Excerpt: "What if you found a portal to a parallel universe? What if you can slide into a thousand different worlds? Where it's the same year and you're the same person, but everything else is different. And what if you can't find your way home?" Good question. A question that was posed every week by actor Jerry O'Connell through his character Quinn Mallory in the science fiction television series, Sliders....On October 31, 2005, a DVD compilation of the third season of Sliders was released by Universal Studios. It contained four double-sided DVDs containing every episode of the third season, plus some bonus features. Since I was already the proud owner of the Season One / Two DVD set, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the Season 3 set..."
Just My Luck - Justine Manzano reviews the comedy starring Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine.
Excerpt: "I have a confession to make. I really, really don't like Lindsay Lohan. The truth is, she has never done anything to me, and I have no reason to dislike her, or any of the other crazy people that seem to surround her (for one, Paris Hilton). I don't really think Lohan can act, she can sing, but her choice of production is not great, and she seems in a daze whenever she does anything. Yet, for some strange reason that can only be explained by the fact that I am a romantic, I wanted to see Just My Luck, Lohan's most recent romantic comedy, when it came out in the theaters. Due to a lack of funds (G-Pop doesn't pay the rent or the tuition, and that's all my day job seems capable of!) I never went to see the film, but instead, rented it last week. So, I gave Lohan a shot. Here's how it turned out..."
Star Wars: Dark Nest II: The Unseen Queen - Melissa Minners reviews the second book in the Star Wars series set after the Yuuzhan Vong war.
Excerpt: "It would seem that the heroes of the New Jedi Order will never find a moment's rest. In Dark Nest I ...the Jedi uncovered a Dark Nest, run by the dark Jedi and feasting on captured Chiss warriors. The nest was destroyed by the Jedi and Princess Leia formulated a plan that would find the Killiks new worlds and at the same time bring peace to the galaxy, away from Chiss space. However, in Dark Nest II: The Unseen Queen by Troy Denning, we soon learn that the peace is short lived. Members of the Dark Nest, thought to be extinguished by the Jedi a year ago, have begun selling dark membrosia to insectoid species everywhere. They are hiring pirates to steal large quantities of fuel as well, leading the Galactic Alliance to believe that the Dark Nest is preparing to launch a major attack. Worse yet, the new world found for the Killiks is making them sick. Something known as the Fizz is attacking everything it comes in contact with, including the insectoids themselves...."
Rocky Balboa - Ismael Manzano reviews the sixth installment in the Rocky series starring Sylvester Stallone.
Excerpt: "The first Rocky movie came out the same year I was born, so you could very accurately say that I grew up watching Rocky. I don't remember if my father purposely introduced me to this iconic piece of Americana all the while telling me what a great movie it was or whether I just watched the repeats as a child on TV with the adults and fell in love with the movies on my own, but whatever the case, I was always a big fan of the Rocky series, even when the movies did not merit the fandom it received. Flash forward thirty years and four sequels and now you have the release of the—hopefully—last installment of the Rocky series, simply entitled, Rocky Balboa..."
Memoirs of a Geisha - Melissa Minners reviews the dramatic novel by Arthur Golden that inspired the major motion picture.
Excerpt: "In the novel, Memoirs of a Geisha, author Arthur Golden seeks to reveal for us the reality behind being a geisha. He seeks to show us the human side as well as the artistic side; the performance versus the reality. Golden achieves his goal in an amazingly unique way. The writing is so realistic…so believable…that one would honestly believe they were reading the memoirs of a famous geisha as told to a translator and documented for the world to read. However, this is a work of historical fiction that spans the period of time beginning just prior to the Depression and ending some time after World War II..."
See No Evil - Jon Minners reviews the horror film starring Glen Jacobs, known to the wrestling world as Kane.
Excerpt: "Glen Jacobs is a wrestler who has played several roles in his career, but for close to a decade, his role as Kane has struck a nerve with fans who love him almost as much as his storyline brother, The Undertaker. Even as Kane, Jacobs has adapted his character from seriously burned victim in need of a mask to a psychopath who thinks he is horribly disfigured to just a disturbed individual looking to take out his tormented past on his unsuspecting opponents. Jacobs does a good job and it makes total sense that he would be the wrestler tapped to play the horror lead in the genre film, See No Evil."
Minners Commentary Corner and Badseed's Bottomline are all new:
Minners Commentary Corner: 2006: You Are Forgiven - "Read the paper today. It turns out James Brown died. I felt somewhat bad. Then I got over it. Apparently, no one else will. I may sound like an ass, but James Brown spent time in jail for going on a two-day rampage and threatening people's lives with a shotgun. He also had a storied history of spousal abuse. What life are we celebrating?..."
Badseed's Bottomline #404: 2006 - A Look Back - "Hey yo! 2006 was a strange year for me. I am still not sure what to make of it. Let's take a quick look back...."
