More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Look! Up in the sky! It's a talk show host! It's an interative DVD set! No, it's G-POP.net in 2007!
Here's what's new for this week:
First Impressions: A New Reality - In this installment of First Impressions, Jon Minners takes a look at the new reality shows making their debut this month, including Armed & Famous, White Rapper Show, I Love New York, and Surreal Life Fame Game.
Excerpt: "It's a brand new year and as is customary on television these days, it means a brand new slate of reality television shows. Reality television shows are cheap and very easy to make, so when a show flops or takes a hiatus or if you are a cable channel with a niche for watching celebrities make a fool of themselves, a reality television show is just what the doctor ordered. The latest shows are actually surprisingly good with the exception of one. Can you guess which one I am going to trash? Stay tuned:..."
Marilyn Hotckiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School - Melissa Minners reviews this feel-good dramedy with a star-studded cast.
Excerpt: "A short time ago, a friend told a group of us that a film he had worked on in 2004 was finally going to be released in theaters all over the United States. I was excited for him. Upon hearing the name of the production, I was a tad worried. I mean, Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School was a fairly long title in this day and age of the Short & Sweet Syndrome. The title made me wonder a tad at the content, but I have faith in my friend and his choice of movie roles, so I figured there must be more to this movie than just its title. Once I viewed the trailer, I knew I was right and couldn't wait to see the full-length film. As it turns out, I had to wait a tad longer than I wanted to – I missed the release and had to wait for Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School to come out on DVD. Boy, was it worth the wait!..."
Why Xbox 360 Will Continue to Win the Console Wars - Jon Minners discusses why he believes that the Xbox 360 outranks other gaming consoles of its kind.
Excerpt: "Well, here it is 2007 – the crazy Christmas that saw people rushing out for the latest hardware from both SONY and Nintendo is over and now in the New Year, there are plenty of PS3 consoles available and still a shortage of Nintendo Wii consoles, but as the smoke begins to clear the true winner of the great console wars of a new generation is still Microsoft's Xbox 360...."
Lifeforce: The Expanded Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Melissa Minners reviews the expanded version of the original motion picture soundtrack of the science fiction / horror flick.
Excerpt: "Nothing angers a film producer more than when the creation they have worked painstakingly for days, months, sometimes even years is hacked to pieces by industry executives either to reduce costs or for time constraints...But, what most people don't think about, is what damage executive cuts can do to a movie's film score. When a scene is decimated, so is the score written for that scene – the composition no longer fits...In 2006, BuySoundtrax Records released a 3000 copy limited edition 2-CD set of the Lifeforce soundtrack, entitled Lifeforce: The Expanded Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The CD set contains the original complete score by Mancini, plus the additional tracks created for the shortened version of the film by Michael Kamen...."
Joan of Arcadia: Season One - Justine Manzano reviews the DVD compilation of season one of the hit drama series Joan of Arcadia.
Excerpt: "Things have changed in my life in the last year. I have shocked myself with the whole discovery of God, since I was the single most cynical person I knew on the subject of religion. This just happened this year. So, when Joan of Arcadia was released on CBS in 2003, I was totally without religion. One would think that would make a show co-starring God impossible to watch…but that isn't the case..."
The Novice: Book Two of the Black Magician Trilogy - Ismael Manzano reviews the second installment of the fantasy series by Trudi Cavanan.
Excerpt: "A short while back I picked up a book by Trudi Canavan called, "The Magician's Guild," and was blown away by the intricacy and creativity of Canavan's fictitious world. So it was no big surprise that I chose to go back to the Canavan well for another good story with which to read and review. As soon as I had a moment, I picked up the sequel,"The Novice," and delved right into the world I'd enjoyed so much the first time around..."
Minners Commentary Corner and Badseed's Bottomline are all new:
Minners Commentary Corner: Rants of a Madman - "Isn't it weird that I went on a rant last time about how 2006 was the year of forgiveness when considering the scenarios around James Brown and Mel Gibson just to name a few, and then President Gerald Ford dies. Pardon me, but I just find that ironic. So, I was listening to the radio the other day and I was listening to Beyonce's Irreplaceable song. I love that song, but then I realized how bad Beyonce comes off in the track. Her man was cheating on her, which is one of the reasons she gives for telling him to pack his bags and go, but then she tells him she can have another him in a minute. In fact, according to her, he will be there in a minute. Did I hear that right? Beyonce wants another man who will cheat on her? You'd think she would want better..."
Badseed's Bottomline #406: Just Some Thoughts - "Hey yo! So, I watched a lot of wrestling this week and these are some thoughts that came to my head. I just want to wish the family of the One Man Gang my condolences. I was so sorry to hear of his loss while watching the Survivor Series DVD. I nearly cried when the so-called broadcast journalist called him the late, great One Man Gang. Such a travesty..."
