A long, long time ago...in a galaxy far, far away, there lived a crew of brave individuals with a dream. That dream...to seek out new life forms...oh, wait...no...to seek out new forms of entertainment (yeah, that's right!)...to boldly go where no e-zine has gone before! These are the voyages of the e-zine G-POP.net!
Here's what's new for this week:
First Impressions: Afro Samurai - In this installment of First Impressions, Jon Minners takes a look at the new anime series on Spike TV.
Excerpt: "After the announced cancellation of Blade: The Series, Spike TV was left without a truly original scripted program and while one failed attempt could have deterred them, the network for men continues to push forward with the unique and niche-friendly Afro Samurai..."
The Good Shepherd - Ismael Manzano reviews the new drama starring Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Angelina Jolie, and Robert DeNiro.
Excerpt: "A while back I saw a preview for a movie entitled the Good Shepherd. The preview promised intrigue and suspense with an underlying hint of danger and paranoia to boot. My interest was piqued, I had to admit, and so when the movie finally came to the theater, I was ready, willing and rushing to the local multiplex to watch it. This is my recount of the movie and my experience with it..."
Blade: The Series - Jon Minners takes a look back at the recently cancelled series based on the comic book and movie franchise of the same name.
Excerpt: "Spike TV lived up to its name recently when it dusted Blade: The Series, leaving viewers who caught the season-ending cliffhanger with their blood thirst unquenched. Having been disappointed after both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel left the airwaves, viewers were pleasantly thrilled to discover a new vampire-based series hitting the airwaves for the male friendly, Spike Television..."
The Superman Family #211 - Melissa Minners Turns Back the Clock to review a Superman Family comic book first released in 1981.
Excerpt: "From 1974 through 1982, DC Comics ran a series that featured the supporting characters of the Superman series in specially tailored stories of their own. The Superman Family basically consisted of Supergirl, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Superboy, Mr. and Mrs. Superman (Earth 2 incarnations of Lois and Clark), Krypto, and more. The series began with reprints of titles such as Superman's Girlfriend: Lois Lane, Superman's Pal: Jimmy Olsen and the second series of Supergirl, with some new stories stuck in every six months or so. By 1977, all of the stories were new. The comic was thick with at least five mini adventures, each at least 9 pages long. The price in those days was about $1 U.S. The Superman Family #211 first appeared in comic book stands in October 1981 and featured 5 stories..."
The Revolution Will Be Accessorized - In this installment of Class Act, Justine Manzano reviews the BlackBook magazine compilation of essays on counterculture.
Excerpt: "I have often covered things that I have been forced to be exposed to for the purposes of one of my school courses. Usually I end up discovering that I like what I have been forced to read. When in my recently ended English class, I was forced to read a book entitled The Revolution Will Be Accessorized, I didn't even get to read the entire book. A series of collected essays on counterculture, my class involved taking selected readings from the book. Still, when class ended and the book was left sitting in my bookcase, I couldn't help but pick it up and read the things I had missed. So did I miss anything?..."
Star Wars: Dark Nest III: The Swarm War - Melissa Minners reviews the final installment in the Star Wars Dark Nest Trilogy.
Excerpt: "When we last saw our heroes in Star Wars: Dark Nest II: The Unseen Queen, they had just fended off another Killik attack, but had lost one of their prize possessions. A Galactic Alliance Star Destroyer known as the Ackbar was commandeered by Raynar Thul and the Killiks for use in his war against the Chiss. Luke Skywalker had gone head-to-head with Gorog Nest Queen Lomi Plo, the former dark force wielder who had been rescued by the Killiks years before. Luke Skywalker lost his battle with Lomi Plo and almost his life. Meanwhile, Leia Organa Solo began training under Barabel Jedi Master Saba Sebatyne in an effort to attain her true calling as Jedi Knight. Her children, Jacen and Jaina Solo seemed destined for very different paths – Jaina seeking to keep the Chiss from committing speciecide against the Killiks and Jacen intent on preventing any harm from his daughter without revealing his relationship to the child. In Dark Nest III: The Swarm War, Luke Skywalker has decided that the Jedi Order has grown too distant from their purpose..."
Random Acts of Ismael and Badseed's Bottomline are all new:
PlayStation Three Disaster - "Recently, the highly anticipated and highly priced PlayStation 3 became available in the American market. Its birth into the world of the gaming community was celebrated by a slew of under-stocked stores and psycho-crazed consumers looking for the next-generation game play. Well it may be apparent to you all by now that the new PlayStation 3, for all its five-hundred plus price-tags, Blue-Ray addition and promised revolution of game play has turned out to be a colossal failure—from a gamer's point of view and from a marketing standpoint..."
Badseed's Bottomline #407: I Am Just Wondering... - "Hey yo! Remember the song, Things That Make You Go Hmmm…? Well, dust off the record again, because a lot going on in wrestling has me scratching my chin and wondering..."
