Here's what's new this week:
First Impressions: The Dresden Files - In this installment, Ismael Manzano gives us his first impressions of the new Sci-Fi Channel series inspired by the Dresden Files novels.
Excerpt: "Last week, I did a review for the book, Storm Front, book one in a series of Jim Butcher novels entitled 'The Dresden Files.' I read said book because of the hype and rumor surrounding an upcoming Sci-Fi show based on and named after the series of books. Being the lover of science fiction that I am, I had to watch it, but first I read the first book to get a feel for the story and the character. So on Sunday evening, when 9pm rolled around, I turned to the Sci-Fi channel and eagerly watched the show that is based on book that I liked so much. This is my first impression of the new series."
Sing for the Moment: Picking the Next American Idol - Jon Minners discusses his picks for this year's American Idol.
Excerpt: "In the past, picking American's Idol's winner was almost a sure thing. There were usually three singers each year who stood out and were favorites to win right from the get-go. Tamyra Grey and Kelly Clarkson stood out in season one. Ruben Studdard was the favorite right away in season two. Fantasia was a virtual lock in season three. Carrie Underwood was a bit of a surprise in season four, and if you could look past Katherine McPhee's and Chris Daughtry's looks, Taylor Hicks had an instant connection with the fans through his whole soul patrol gimmick. But this year is different. More so than ever before, FOX has decided to go a different route and cater to the fans by drowning us in one bad singer after another. The good singers got little time to shine and picking this year's Idol is a little more difficult, at least right from the shoot. Given time, favorites will emerge, but right now, in a bold move – G-Pop will pick the top contestants – one of which is a guaranteed winner...."
Witchling - Linda Lafaire reviews the magic/mystery/fantasy novel from Yasmine Galenorn.
Excerpt: "This past November, I was looking for new books when the title Witchling, by Yasmine Galenorn, came up. I frowned and looked puzzled as to why this book would come up in the Mystery and Detective section. Intrigued now, I open up the title and read the synopsis: Meet the D'Artigo sisters, Delilah, Menolly, and Camille: half-human, half-faerie, they're savvy--and sexy--operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency, but their mixed-blood heritage short-circuits their talents at all the wrong times. Now, being a fan of Charmed (the first three seasons of it anyway), I said why not and added it to my shopping cart..."
Birds of Prey - Melissa Minners Turns Back the Clock to review this 2002 television series based on the popular DC comic book.
Excerpt: "When I first learned about this television series, I couldn't wait for it to air. Batgirl and Black Canary had always been my favorite superheroes. The fact that the Birds of Prey comic book featured both Barbara Gordon and Dinah Lance was more than enough to convince me to watch the show. But, if I needed any more incentive, the idea of Batman and Catwoman producing an offspring was definitely intriguing. When the pilot episode of Birds of Prey finally aired, I was glued to the television set. I remained that way every Wednesday night until the show's untimely death thirteen episodes later...."
The Multi-Purpose Solution: How Can a Man Be Tougher Than the World? - Jon Minners reviews the indie rock band's debut album.
Excerpt: "There is a great story behind the CD: How Can a Man Be Tougher Than the World? Mike Olear recorded the music for the album in May 2005 in Bryan Beninghove's small practice space, 112X, on Brunswick Street of downtown Jersey City, New Jersey, just three days before Bryan and other tenants in the building were going to be kicked out of their homes. The evictions occurred after some battle between feuding landlords. Residents were caught in the middle and the band, The Multi-Purpose Solution decided to record there as a fitting tribute to the location. Great story, huh? Great stories do not always translate to great listening experiences..."
Forever Knight - Justine Manzano Turns Back the Clock to review this television series revolving around a Toronto Police detective who also just happens to be a vampire.
Excerpt: "Much like my husband, Ismael, I have had an obsession with the whole idea around vampires since I was very young. For me, the obsession started when I was 10 years old with the airing of the first episode of a series called Forever Knight...Three seasons long, this show changed how I viewed vampires. It was my Anne Rice (though it didn't take itself nearly as seriously)..."
Random Acts of Ismael and Badseed's Bottomline are all new:
Random Acts of Ismael: Paradise - "Do you consider yourself a decent person? By what measure do you judge your decency? Do you open the door for women and children, spare them the effort of trying to do it themselves? Do you say thank you and please when speaking to someone? Do you think that defines decency and morality? Do you think that's enough to view yourself and others as kind, that you say a few nice words, that you hold open a door for someone who could probably do it for themselves, and that you do a good deed for someone who may not need your help? I do. But does that make us truly decent?..."
Badseed's Bottomline #409: The Road to Wrestlemania Begins - "Hey yo! Usually, around this time, wrestling starts to pick up a bit. The WWE really has to step up its game to get people ready for their biggest show of the year and TNA needs to keep up the pace. It's also a good time to launch a wrestling promotion when wrestling fans are most excited about the time of year..."
