"All of us must rise to the call... above and beyond." - Lt. Col. Tyrus Cassius "TC" McQueen, Space: Above and Beyond
Here's what's new this week:
American Idol: Picking a Winner - Jon Minners gets closer to picking this year's American Idol.
Excerpt: "American Idol: It's the show that has made reality television what it is today and yet no one can duplicate its success. Even Survivor, despite how popular and exciting it is to watch today, is not as relevant as American Idol has been for the last six seasons. No reality show winner has ever won a Grammy or Emmy or Academy Award unless, of course, you are of the world that is American Idol. Yes, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest are stars, but the talent that comes before them on the stage each week start out as nothing and become pop icons..."
Avenue Q - Justine Manzano reviews the Broadway musical by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx.
Excerpt: "On July 31, 2003, a show opened in the John Golden Theatre on 252 West 45th Street that involved puppets misbehaving. It was called Avenue Q. I didn't go to see it right away, and lost in the sea of Broadway shows, I kind of forgot about it. And then, a few months ago, my friend and co-worker Richard got the opportunity to see this show and couldn't stop discussing it with me. So, after being told I had to see it for months, I resigned to my fate. I sat in the audience of this show on Sunday, February 18, 2007, and I couldn't believe what I saw..."
A Plea for a Britney Spears-Free Newscast - Dorothy Doremus begs for a Britney-Free broadcast.
Excerpt: "It occurred to me, as I was enjoying the evening news, that we are on the verge of apocalypse. There I was, enjoying my roast beef dinner watching Bill Ritter on Eyewitness News (NY Station) and listening to the events unfolding in our local viewing area when out of the blue, he goes to a correspondent who is covering not the local robberies or even water main breaks, but Britney Spears shaving her head...."
Spring Awakening - Melissa Minners reviews the soundtrack of the hit Broadway musical with music by Duncan Sheik and lyrics by Steven Sater.
Excerpt: "In 1891, German playwright Frank Wedekind created a masterpiece about sexuality and puberty among young German students. It would be a gross understatement to say that the subject matter of Frühlings Erwachen, otherwise known as Spring Awakening, was exceedingly controversial for the times. The play was banned from the stage for almost a century due to its content. In the spring of 1999, American playwright Steven Sater, having been long intrigued by Wedekind's forbidden play, contacted musician Duncan Sheik and proposed that they create a musical based upon the original play..."
TOKYOPOP Celebrates 10th Anniversary - Jon Minners celebrates the 10th anniversary of the manga icon.
Excerpt: "GTO and Real Bout High School – those are the titles that introduced me to the little manga publishing company with big aspirations – TOKYOPOP. That was such a long time ago. Amazing how time flies and how big TOKYOPOP has become. From great manga titles like Battle Royale and Priest to Dragonhead and Juror 13 and DVD titles from GTO and Initial D to FMW Wrestling and the popular Street Fury series and more recently, the Pop Fiction line of books, TOKYOPOP went from the little company that could to one of the companies that has helped set the standard for Japanese imports. The organization that has been hailed by the New York Times as "the American pioneer of manga," is celebrating its' 10th anniversary in 2007..."
Birds of Prey: The Battle Within - Melissa Minners reviews the latest trade paperback form DC Comics featuring the Birds of Prey.
Excerpt: "Birds of Prey: The Battle Within picks up where Between Dark & Dawn left off, compiling issues 76-85 of the popular DC Comics series. When we last visited our heroes, they had recently lost their headquarters when the Clocktower burned down. Forced to relocate, the Birds took on a new teammate, Lady Blackhawk, a former World War II pilot who somehow found herself transported to present day Gotham. With Lady Blackhawk on the team, headquarters took on an aerial meaning as the team acquired a jet from Ted Kord (otherwise known as Blue Beetle). The agenda for the Birds has also changed – they are now in search of vigilantes that are going too far in their search for justice..."
Minners Commentary Corner and Badseed's Bottomline are all new:
Minners Commentary Corner: Maybe I'm Crazy - "I was in the mall the other day and had to use the bathroom. All the stalls were taken, all but the handicap accessible stall, so I used it. Let me tell you something – the handicap accessible stall is like a hotel room compared to a regular stall. All stalls should have as much room as a handicap accessible stall. I could put my bags down; I could stretch and relax while I did my business. If I wanted to…I could fit a cot inside and I could take a nap. That's how cool the handicap accessible stalls are. I am a big fan..."
Badseed's Bottomline #412: Changing Things Up - "Hey yo! So, last week, I was hating the WWE…this week, I am changing my tune a bit...just a bit. As Wrestlemania approaches, I am loving what they are doing in the WWE. Mixing up brands, complicating things…stories that actually make you think. It's amazing. The whole Undertaker and Batista alliance vs. HBK and John Cena pairing was fun. Seeing Batista fight Cena was great since they just paired up a couple months back. Watching Batista turn on Undertaker was a smart move, although does turning on a face and helping other faces win make you a heel? That's what's awesome…I don't really know. Even seeing Undertaker fight Randy Orton again was great. I pop for interactions like that..."
