"The way of the creative works through change and transformation, so that each thing receives its true nature and destiny and comes into permanent accord with the great harmony: this is what furthers and what perseveres." - I Ching
Over the next couple of weeks, G-POP.net will be undergoing some changes. Rest asured, we will still be seeking to bring to you every form of entertainment we can think of and then some. However, our look will start to change little by little. Who knows, it may be just as entertaining to find the changes to our look as it is to read our articles! Enjoy!
Here's what's new this week:
Daughtry - Melissa Minners reviews the debut album of Daughtry, a band fronted by Chris Daughtry, one of the finalists in the fifth season of American Idol.
Excerpt: Chris Daughtry wowed the world with his amazing vocal performances during the fifth season of American Idol. The strength of his voice and his charismatic nature took him all the way to fourth place in the competition...Together with Daughtry band members Joey Barnes, Josh Paul, Josh Steely, ad Brian Craddock, Chris is finding incredible success. His premier album, Daughtry, has become one of the fastest selling debut rock albums, reaching number one on the Billboard charts only nine weeks after its debut.
Ghost Rider - Ismael Manzano reviews the new action film based on the popular Marvel comic book, starring Nicholas Cage as Ghost Rider.
Excerpt: "The success of such comic adaptations as X-Men, Spiderman.., Sin City, and The Fantastic Four .. has, in recent years, prompted a string of comic book adaptations from lesser known or otherwise less popular comic series. For some of you, Ghost Rider may be a mainstream staple, but for me it is one of those lesser known comics. Surely its opening date wasn't awaited by droves of eager fans with bated breath as were some of the above-mentioned titles, but I was drawn in by the preview and decided to give it a shot..."
Teacher Man - Melissa Minners reviews the third installment in Frank McCourt's (Angela's Ashes) memior series.
Excerpt: "When I was young, I had a creative writing teacher who inspired me to no end. His name was Mr. Shaw and he showed me that my drivel was actually worth the paper it was printed on. He encouraged me to use my mind…to delve into my creative side…and to produce whatever came naturally. After I left elementary school, I longed for such an inspiring person to nurture and feed my creative side. I never found an educator who inspired me in such a way. How I wish I could have spent some time in Frank McCourt's creative writing classes. Reading about McCourt's innovative teaching techniques – even those that he would probably fully admit were attempts made while flying by the seat of his pants – made me wish that I had such a creative educator in my teenage years…someone to aspire me to achieve greater heights..."
Encores of the Week:
Avenue Q - Justine Manzano reviews the Broadway musical by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx.
Excerpt: "On July 31, 2003, a show opened in the John Golden Theatre on 252 West 45th Street that involved puppets misbehaving. It was called Avenue Q. I didn't go to see it right away, and lost in the sea of Broadway shows, I kind of forgot about it. And then, a few months ago, my friend and co-worker Richard got the opportunity to see this show and couldn't stop discussing it with me. So, after being told I had to see it for months, I resigned to my fate. I sat in the audience of this show on Sunday, February 18, 2007, and I couldn't believe what I saw..."
A Plea for a Britney Spears-Free Newscast - Dorothy Doremus begs for a Britney-Free broadcast.
Excerpt: "It occurred to me, as I was enjoying the evening news, that we are on the verge of apocalypse. There I was, enjoying my roast beef dinner watching Bill Ritter on Eyewitness News (NY Station) and listening to the events unfolding in our local viewing area when out of the blue, he goes to a correspondent who is covering not the local robberies or even water main breaks, but Britney Spears shaving her head...."
Birds of Prey: The Battle Within - Melissa Minners reviews the latest trade paperback form DC Comics featuring the Birds of Prey.
Excerpt: "Birds of Prey: The Battle Within picks up where Between Dark & Dawn left off, compiling issues 76-85 of the popular DC Comics series. When we last visited our heroes, they had recently lost their headquarters when the Clocktower burned down. Forced to relocate, the Birds took on a new teammate, Lady Blackhawk, a former World War II pilot who somehow found herself transported to present day Gotham. With Lady Blackhawk on the team, headquarters took on an aerial meaning as the team acquired a jet from Ted Kord (otherwise known as Blue Beetle). The agenda for the Birds has also changed – they are now in search of vigilantes that are going too far in their search for justice..."
