A very happy birthday to someone who gave us the writing gene, thereby planting the seed that helped this website grow - Happy Birthday, Dad!
Here's what's new this week:
The Number 23 - Melissa Minners reviews the soundtrack of the new psychological thriller starring Jim Carrey.
Excerpt: "The Number 23 is a psychological thriller directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Jim Carrey.. in a rare dramatic role. Carrey portrays Walter Sparrow, an Animal Control Officer who becomes obsessed with a novel given to him by his wife (Virginia Madsen..) on his birthday – "The Number 23". As Carrey continues to read the mystery novel, he becomes more obsessed with it...His obsession leads to severe paranoia as Carrey begins to actually believe that the book was actually penned about him. As a psychologically intense thriller, The Number 23's soundtrack would have to be equally intense..."
Random Acts of Ismael: Poetry - Ismael Manzano discusses his experience at a poetry reading that he participated in for a Creative Writing class.
Excerpt: "Ladies and gentleman, I bring today, an article detailing a milestone in the life of Ismael Manzano, or a least a stepping stone on a dirt road of my life. For any of you out there that know me, I don't have to tell you that I am far from perfect. Among my many faults, genetic and emotional, I suffer from a disease called stagus-impeteous, known throughout Greece as speakus-pussious. Or in layman's terms, stage-fright...".
Where Were You On The Night Batman Was Killed? - Melissa Minners Turns Back the Clock to review a Batman story arc from the late 1970s.
Excerpt: "In September of 1977, I spotted an interesting issue of Batman. The cover showed what appeared to be Batman's tombstone. It was surrounded by arch enemies The Riddler, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, Lex Luthor, Catwoman, and The Joker. Four of the criminals were claiming responsibility for the death of the Caped Crusader. I immediately ran to get my mother and ask her for 35 cents – yeah, that's right, comic books back then were a mere 35 cents – and marched proudly out of the store with Issue # 291 of Batman. The series, entitled Where Were You On The Night Batman Was Killed? ran for four issues in 1977..."
Encores of the Week:
Mr. Fix It - Justine Manzano reviews the straight-to-video release of a comedy starring David Boreanaz.
Excerpt: "Again, I continue my peek into the works of brilliance of my favorite actor, David Boreanaz... Sometimes they are very good (Bones, These Girls). Sometimes they are amazingly bad (The Crow: Wicked Prayer). On this particular adventure, I discovered Mr. Fix It, another straight-to-video release with a familiar plot, which sounded like a waste of my time. So, I bought it. Hey, what other choice did I have? Boreanaz is an incredible choice of eye candy with decent enough acting skills and I can't resist the chances of a bad review, so I gave it a shot.
300 - Ismael Manzano reviews the movie adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel about the Battle of Thermopylae.
Excerpt: "It's probably no big secret to anyone who read my Sin City review, but I'm a big fan of Frank Miller. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that when I heard about his latest movie, an adaptation of his graphic novel 300, I was eager to see it. Only this movie was special and I wanted to wait until I could get into an IMAX theater so that I could truly enjoy the experience..."
Badseed's Bottomline # 414: Playing Devil's Advocate with ECW - After having critiqued the ECW on assorted occassions, Jon Minners discusses what he finds to be the good aspects of the ECW.
Excerpt: "Hey yo! So, I am an ECW diehard fan. And I have critiqued the product as of late, because it has sucked, but lately, while watching, I have noticed some good aspects of ECW and it is only fair I discuss them. My love affair with ECW first started many years ago just as Shane Douglas was about to lose the title to Bam Bam Bigelow and RVD was waving the flag of the original WWF in a feud with Tommy Dreamer..."
