Here's what's new this week:
Children of Men - Ismael Manzano reviews the latest action / suspense movie directed by Alfonso Cuaron, starring Clive Owen and Julianne Moore.
Excerpt: "I first heard about Children of Men a few months ago via a movie preview, and I was intrigued with this off-the-beaten-path premise for a movie. From the preview I could tell that this was not going to be the typical, Hollywood action / science fiction movie. This was going to be a movie with a message and an actual plot. So when I was left with three hours to kill in between a doctor's appointment and my first class of the day, I decided to catch the flick and see if my instincts were dead on or just dead..."
Badseed's Bottomline # 415: What's Wrong With TNA - Jon Minners discusses what he believes is wrong with TNA.
Excerpt: "Hey yo! So, I am jumping on the bandwagon and I am going to attack TNA, not because I hate them, but because I am upset with the product they have been putting out as of late. Now, while I do not agree with some who say we should send letters to those who sponsor TNA in a hopes of putting the wrestling company on notice, I am in firm agreement with the same writer..."
Jennifer Troulis: A Rising Star Feature - The latest addition to the Rising Star Feature section is the author of the children's book series Penelope and Priscilla.
Excerpt: "Barnes and Noble is a terrific bookstore. It offers me a little bit of everything, from books to magazines to coffee to choice encounters with up-and-coming authors. A couple of weeks ago, I had just such an encounter with the author of a new children's book series about magical twin sisters. As I passed her table, I heard the author, Jennifer Troulis, discussing her book series with a mother and her two young daughters. She was so animated…so excited about her series of books designed with young girls in mind…that I just had to talk to her. Listening to how she got her beginnings as an author/artist, how she struggled to make her dreams become a reality, and her outlook on the future of her book line, I knew for certain that Jennifer Troulis was a star on the rise..."
Encores of the Week:
The Number 23 - Melissa Minners reviews the soundtrack of the new psychological thriller starring Jim Carrey.
Excerpt: "The Number 23 is a psychological thriller directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Jim Carrey.. in a rare dramatic role. Carrey portrays Walter Sparrow, an Animal Control Officer who becomes obsessed with a novel given to him by his wife (Virginia Madsen..) on his birthday – "The Number 23". As Carrey continues to read the mystery novel, he becomes more obsessed with it...His obsession leads to severe paranoia as Carrey begins to actually believe that the book was actually penned about him. As a psychologically intense thriller, The Number 23's soundtrack would have to be equally intense..."
Random Acts of Ismael: Poetry - Ismael Manzano discusses his experience at a poetry reading that he participated in for a Creative Writing class.
Excerpt: "Ladies and gentleman, I bring today, an article detailing a milestone in the life of Ismael Manzano, or a least a stepping stone on a dirt road of my life. For any of you out there that know me, I don't have to tell you that I am far from perfect. Among my many faults, genetic and emotional, I suffer from a disease called stagus-impeteous, known throughout Greece as speakus-pussious. Or in layman's terms, stage-fright...".
Where Were You On The Night Batman Was Killed? - Melissa Minners Turns Back the Clock to review a Batman story arc from the late 1970s.
Excerpt: "In September of 1977, I spotted an interesting issue of Batman. The cover showed what appeared to be Batman's tombstone. It was surrounded by arch enemies The Riddler, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, Lex Luthor, Catwoman, and The Joker. Four of the criminals were claiming responsibility for the death of the Caped Crusader. I immediately ran to get my mother and ask her for 35 cents – yeah, that's right, comic books back then were a mere 35 cents – and marched proudly out of the store with Issue # 291 of Batman. The series, entitled Where Were You On The Night Batman Was Killed? ran for four issues in 1977..."
