Here's what's new this week:
First Impressions: Drive - In this edition of First Impressions, Justine Manzano reviews the new FOX drama.
Excerpt: "Television seasons have become so strange. We've gone from Fall Season, to Fall Season and Mid-Season replacement to the new three-quarters of a season replacement. It's an odd construction, but it happens and we must strive to understand it. Sometimes it's a good thing. Windfall was a surprisingly fun little soap opera that survived all of last summer only to be cancelled the minute the fall shows came back. This season, however, we have been given doses of a new show to whet our appetite with: Fox's Drive. This series instantly annoyed me with its two hour Sunday premiere followed by its Monday night actual schedule. My DV-R does not like switchable schedules like this, but thankfully it survived, and I got to watch the premiere..."
Random Acts of Ismael: Bone to the Grind - Ismael Manzano rants about his ten year job anniversary.
Excerpt: "Hello once again residents of the only truly free, melting pot society—the internet—I'm back with yet another piss and moan rant about things I've observed throughout the course of my life to prove to you all that I apparently have not done much with my life if this is all I can think to complain about. You'll never read anything from me complaining about my recent trip to the moon or some new thing or another that I discovered or invented or charted. No. You get me complaining about things that I know about. And what do I know about? Today, it's working like a slave to get just enough money to not go bankrupt. Yeah!..."
Home of the Brave - Melissa Minners reviews the soundtrack of the controversial new war movie.
Excerpt: "Home of the Brave is the story of four soldiers returning from tours of duty in Iraq after a particularly harrowing experience....The musical score of the film is composed by Stephen Endelman.....an English-born composer who began composing award-winning musical scores at the age of eighteen..."
Encores of the Week:
The Twelve Kingdoms: Sea of Shadow - Melissa Minners reviews the first novel of a popular Japanese series, released in the United States for the first time by TOKYOPOP.
Excerpt: "...The Twelve Kingdoms is toted to be one of the most popular teen novel series published in Japan. Its later transformation into an anime series spawned fans from all over the world, who have been eagerly awaiting The Twelve Kingdom book series' debut in English. Sea of Shadows is the first translated novel of the series released by TOKYOPOP's Pop Fiction division...".
TMNT - Ismael Manzano reviews the latest addition to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies, a CGI version distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Excerpt: " It should be no surprise to any of you out there in webland, that I am an enormous child. Hence, when I heard that Hollywood was making a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.. movie, I quickly jumped on board and waited for my chance to buy a ticket. When I heard it was CGI animated and not yet another sequel to the disastrous puppet-based franchise, I was really excited. Using CGI would free the actions scenes from the restrictions of what people in hundred pound rubber suits could accomplish. So here's my take on this new rendition of a favorite classic of mine..."
First Impressions: Divine Canine / It's Me or the Dog - In this installment of First Impressions, Melissa Minners discusses two new half-hour long series from Animal Planet.
Excerpt: "Hello, my name is Melissa Minners and I am an Animal Cops-aholic. Every night, I turn to Animal Planet to get my daily fix of my favorite heroes rescuing the most adorable animals from the most horrifying conditions. One night, while watching Animal Cops, I was treated to a preview of two new shows coming to Animal Planet – Divine Canine and It's Me or the Dog. Both shows deal with dogs that exhibit less than desirable behaviors. We all know people with out of control pets. I myself used to live with one. When that person was gone, it was up to me to retrain the dog and set her on the right path. Interested in seeing other people's methods of dog training, I decided to watch both shows..."
